DAMN AND RATS! What I thought was a common-or-garden toothache has turned out to be an abcess. Why do these things always happen at weekends when the GP's surgery is closed? Angry Don't think there'll be any NOMNESS happening here, swallowing is too painful Cry <very bad words emoticon>

Oh dear, sorry to hear that.

Mort,  your local Health Board will have emergency dental services in place, check their website.  I have just checked mine and it also said that your dentist should have an emergency number on their ansaphone.  Our nearest two hospitals also have dental departments, do you have a hospital within easy reach?

Thanks all Kiss I think I'll be able to sort it without treking to a hospital. I remembered that I had some anti-biotics that are suitable for this kind of infection (for some reason the pharmacist gave me more than had been prescribed). I've got some decent painkillers to tide me over until the ABs kick in. Fingers crossed that should do the trick and I will be a happier bunny Smiley

Only just seen Mort's message. Mort, I hope you are using copious mouthwashes of hot strong salt water.

Oh yes Ron. It surprised me when a dentist first recommended it (in addition to a course of antibiotics), but I found such hot salty mouthwashes very efficacious. He suggested that the osmotic pressure leached water from the bacteria and thus helped the antibiotics in their work. I had my doubts about his reasoning, but it did seem to help.

Whew. As well as the jaw thing, I've had a chest pain for the past few days, gradually getting worse. Phoned doctors at 3:15, got put through to a doctor who told me that I could come at 3:45. Rushed up there by bus and tram, as usual, and just made it in time. Apparently the tissue surrounding my left lung has become inflamed, so have to take tablets. I didn't have any money with me, so now have to go back there to collect it. A relief it wasn't anything worse Smiley

Eru, best take it easy if you can (yes, yes, I know. The Proms!). That sounds like pleurisey. It's an unpleasant infection which can leave you feeling really quite knocked about.  I've been there. Did your doc give it a name?

He didn't mention any specific illness, no. I've collected the tablets now. I'm glad it's not proper antibiotics, just ibuprofen, which in fact I bought over the counter at a 5th of the prescription price. hurrah.  Smiley
