Any advice for me to give my dad who's nursing my mum with shingles? Sad She was diagnosed on Wed and is quite ill, at home in bed, on 5 pills a day. My dad's only just told me. Angry She has the rash on her face - on the top right quarter of her head. I know there's a danger it'll go in her eye. She's hardly eating. I've advised my dad to up the liquids and told him to buy some rehydration salts as from what he says she's not drinking enough.

Is she on any form of anti-viral medication? They can't knock out the chickenpox virus, but they do hamper its spread somewhat. I can't know for sure, but I have a feeling that the course of aciclovir helped limit the extent of the episode I experienced a few years ago.

She has my sympathy. I take it you have Googled "shingles treatment", etc.

Echoing Bryn's sympathy here too. My ex-father-in-law had it for a long time and although he was very brave about it, it was wretched.

A (25) year-old friend of mine just was back in the office after being off for three weeks with shingles.  Nasty enough for him :/

Absolutely. Is it more common in elderly people? It does seem to be.

Shingles tends to hit people whose immune systems aren't 100%. Has she been 'run down' for a while before this happened, MJ? It comes from the same family (Herpes) as the cold sore which also appears when someone is run down. Like the cold sore it is also easily spread by touch. Try to ensure she doesn't touch it and then, for example, rub her eyes.

She must be feeling miserable. It's a nasty painful thing.Hope her medication gets it sorted soon.

Shingles is very  painful.  An icepack (or a pack of frozen peas) can often help on the affected part.  If she is on Zorivax it is essential to drink lots of water to keep the kidneys functioning.

Thanks everyone. She's on 5 pills a day which I presume are antiviral pills. I'll ask which one it is. I have googled but it's always helpful (and comforting) to have personal replies. Kiss Kiss Kiss

She's been OK healthwise Mort, at least, she hadn't told me she was feeling run-down. She's fairly active and has healthy sea-air being near the Devon coast. I was going to ask her if she fancied coming up to help us settle into our new house...perhaps not! Fortunately she came to visit us in May so we've seen her recently. A long way for me to pop down - but if I wasn't moving imminently I could.

My dad told me she ate a mashed banana yesterday but he had to feed her as her arms are too weak - which worries me. She also fancied a packet of crisps! Must be her body demanding salt. I'm going to ask him if he'd like me to order a home delivery from a local supermarket as that would make it easier for him (no computer). He drives but they're in a fairly remote village so it takes a big chunk out of the day to go shopping.

I know nothing about shingles other than that I've known other people suffer with it.  I hope she recovers very soon Mabeljane.  Kiss

Aciclovir - that's the antiviral medication she's on. Plus codeine phosphate painkillers. She's still sleeping a lot but I was pleased to hear that she's been issuing my dad with instructions so she must be feeling slightly better. Smiley I offered to do an online shop for him but a neighbour's already asked for a shopping list for Tesco.

DAMN AND RATS! What I thought was a common-or-garden toothache has turned out to be an abcess. Why do these things always happen at weekends when the GP's surgery is closed? Angry Don't think there'll be any NOMNESS happening here, swallowing is too painful Cry <very bad words emoticon>

Oh Mort, that is horrid. Yes, they always occur at weekends, they lie in wait throughout the week, usually when you are not at all busy and could easily have gone to the dentist, until weekend and busy times ... just to make it awkward.

I do hope you feel better soon,

Have you considered the Dental Hospital in Leicester square ( is it?) At least they could give you some antibiotics?

< hug and sympathy emoticon>
