Forget that.
In the light of the fishwifery going on in the "Moderator's fingers" thread. I'm taking an extended break, possibly permanently. I clearly came back too soon.
This board has obviously lost any interest it once had in music - if you are going to hurl insults, perhaps you could at least try to make them spitefully amusing?
The Algonquin Club it is not.
Adios. The worst thing about leaving is having to agree with Sydney Grew and Ian Pace.

Reiner for heaven's sake! How many more posts saying "forget the whole thing and start afresh" do you need? The above post is exactly what I've been complaining about - fuelling resentment all the time and causing trouble where there's no need for any. I'm sure that nobody wants you to leave. I certainly don't. If you keep flouncing out every time you don't agree with something, this is never going to end.

I'm off to Beijing to play an (illegal) Messiah and a Dido in the Beijing Music Festival with AAM. I'm back in less than a week but then may be off again for a few days to do Brandenburg 1 in Padua (not sure if that's happening yet). I hope everyone is still here when I return!

Why is your Messiah illegal? Because it is a Christian work? Do they turn a blind eye because it's music or is there a risk involved?

I'm a bit hazy on the details. The Messiah concert was planned ages ago, supposedly as part of the Festival. But it never had any publicity, wasn't listed on the Festival calendar etc. Then the Torygraph ran a melodramatic story a week or two ago saying our concert had been banned by the authorities. It's kind of true, as it's not actually open to the public - to get around a law forbidding performances of religious works, it's an invitation-only closed concert. So our audience will consist only of those very authorities who have "banned" the performance - and their guests. Oh the irony.

But bearing in mind the hoops Baroquers had to jump through to get Biblical texts onto the stage this may well be a first in Historical Bureaucracy.

Best of luck, strina. Sounds totally batty about Messiah to my mind. It was composed for secular performance. Would they do Saul or Samson? Or Saint Saens' Samson et D?

Hello everyone, I'm back but only for about 12 hours! And I see there are 5 pages of new messages to read...
The Beijing Messiah was extraordinary. Most of the audience turned out to be invited guests from the Beijing Festival's main sponsors, but there were government bigwigs about as well. The church (I'll try posting some photos on the appropriate thread when I have a chance) was surrounded by a police cordon, there were loads of guards about - I've never felt so confident about leaving my violin someplace! The performances of both the Messiah and Dido went quite well and were well received by enthusiastic audiences. And Beijing was fantastic - I really want to go back and explore more. Even the famous pollution wasn't too bad after the first day (which was ghastly - a real industrial fug).
I am doing that Brandenburg concert in Italy I mentioned, so I'd better go and (re)pack. I think I must be mad for taking it on (particularly as I couldn't get a hold of a piccolo violin in time and it's much harder on a regular violin), but I couldn't turn down a chance like that! Ugh. I'll be back here again next week, ta 'till then.
