I have to be in working for most of today, and I'm experimenting with my Chopin-tolerance levels by keeping it on for as long as I can bear it. It's now 10.08 and I'm starting to twitch. But that may just be because I've never much liked the Bb minor sonata, which is on BAL today.

A friend of mine chatting just now on MSN has told me that his car was broken into last night in Manchester at a gig. Among the things taken like sunglasses, cds and odds and ends out of the boot - would you believe they took his child's car seat? Whatever else they took they could have left the child's seat! I daren't put on here what I think of them because Mary would be really shocked... ( but I'm sure you all know and also what I'd like to do with them if I got hold of them )

I dozed off just before one of my favourite Chopin works - the 2nd piano conc. Woke up hearing the only bit in it I dislike - that big, garish major chord in the last movement just before the horn call. See, martle, it's not just your music that's soporific!

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

Was that at Bridgewater Hall, Milly? I was there, but I think I have a pretty decent alibi. I have a grumpy rant. The night before last I was staying with a friend, and in the hopes of catching a glimpse of another friend we watched a substantial portion of the classical brit awards. Is that sort of thing really what most people in this country think of as classical music? I couldn't decide whether it was more appalling or depressing. As far as I'm concerned, most of what was presented wasn't even so-called "crossover" - it was just bad pop tunes dressed up in a bit of self-importance and evening wear.

I'm afraid that's exactly what people have been hoodwinked into, strina....
(Just looking into the possibility of making the trek to Inverness for next Tuesday, btw - no promises, since it will involve an overnight stay and some logistical juggling, but I'm on the case,)

- would you believe they took his child's car seat? Must be true what they say about juvenile offenders getting younger all the time... or is it policemen they say that about? or is it shorter they're getting? If anyone steals the child seat from my car I shall be on the phone to MJ Neutering Services (no job too small) in no time of course. Martle, I can't imagine anyone would think of your music as soporific... Martle? Martle, get your head off that desk!

I've just seen some of the repeat of this as I was idling away a wet Saturday. It is unbelievable. There was someone called Josh Groban on, nothing even remotely classical or even crossover about him. I just don't understand, and if I were one of the serious real musicians given an award - there are some - I would refuse it on a matter of principle. What worries me most is that people ignorant of real music (and that's a lot of people in this country) may actually think this is the real thing. Just change the name, call it something else.

I doubt it very much Strina - he went to see the Quireboys. I didn't ask him where they were performing but when he comes back on later I'll find out.

Ah right. It was the Manchester Academy and if I hadn't already been booked somewhere else - I'd have gone with him. I love heavy rock.

Sarah Brightman singing in way that wouldn't get her through the audition to a decent choir.....why can't I switch this off? Same reason people go to freak shows, I suppose - horrified fascination. What on earth must Colin Davis be thinking? What a waste of an evening for him. He even made a speech.
EDIT: Just altering my incorrect spelling of Colin Davis's surname - and I'd like to add that when I mentioned that Sarah Brightman's performance wouldn't have got her into a decent choir, I meant a decent amateur choir.

Horrible, isn't it?? I wonder why the category of "easy listening" has fallen by the wayside, because that's what (for the most part) these awards seemed to be about. Colin Davis looked a bit embarrassed to be there, and made a brief and dignified speech, but I do wish he had done a Michael Moore and let rip about the whole thing.
My friend who was playing in the orchestra says he was paid a (relatively) huge fee for that gig. Unfortunately it's in b*ll*cks like this that the money and publicity are to be found, so no one's willing to slag it off publicly for fear of forfeiting a possible share of the pie. All the doom and gloom and talk of the demise of "classical music" has created an atmosphere of cowardice and desperate grabbing at whatever's going while it still lasts. No one seems willing to stick out their neck and say what they think. No one thinks they can afford integrity and honesty. So depressing.

I love heavy rock.
I quite like heavy rock occasionally, I have some Iron Butterfly and Guns 'N Roses. At the moment I am going through an 80s retro thing. Pet Shop Boys (Discography on at the mo), Dr. Robert and The Blow Monkeys, Echo & The Bunnymen, Marc Almond, Morrissey even. It's music that cheers and uplifts the soul. Candyfloss maybe (except for Morrissey) - but sometimes you need that when the days are dark and drear and the light at the end of the tunnel seems a long way away.
