Can anyone give me any advice on how to watch tv with a nearly deaf, nearly blind mother who flicks from channel to channel just as things are getting interesting then rests on a programme that showed a man eating a large insect after chopping its head off ? (to a strict veggie that was obscene!!) The tv is so loud I hear it better from a room at the other side of the house but I think she wonders where I am when I do that!! So... headache and smiles I guess!! Answers on a postcard please Back darn sarf tomorrow . A

I think you just have to grin and bear it, A. It must be pretty awful for her. It can't be fun being nearly deaf and nearly blind.

What a shame, A, that a hearing-aid can't help her - obviously if it could, you'd have made sure she had one. All I can suggest is earplugs for you and a large dose of patience.

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

I am sorry, I am actually very patient with her and she is amazing. I have just remembered she said she had run out of batteries for her hearing aids last night ( Sat ) and can't get anymore until mon!! We have had a lovely few days , I am getting really good at pushing a wheel chair... she has to go where I say ( not really honest!) and we have driven through lots of wonderful countryside ,with my super daughter she has enjoyed that a lot. So... grump over... sorry A

No worries A. This is where The Radio 3 Bpards come in. This is where you can have a grumble. have waffle rides again, The happy Room, anything really!! And this is the place where us board members are quite good at listening to people's problems and have advice as well. No othe place quite like it.

Right. My water is cut off. I don't know why. 'THEY' have been doing works on the sewerage mains for months, and every day has been punctuated by deafening power drills. But no explanation of this latest aberration, nor clue as to how to fix it. Will be calling plumber tomorrow. Meanwhile, my very kind neighbours have given me the key to their (currently vacant) upstairs flat. Had to go into work today unshaven and stinky. (Luckily I only had to meet with senior management!) <ha ha!>
<smiley connected with adolescent glee at proof that I am young and smelly at heart, despite all apperances to the contrary>

Horrendous delays on the Reading and Windsor lines of South West Trains this afternoon and evening. "What a boring grump" you might think and it is. But the thrust of my grump is directed at myself and other moaners who were inconvenienced, because we all well knew the reason for the problem was that some poor soul had reached such a state of hopelessness that they had stepped in front of a speeding freight train. Memo to self, more immediate compassion required for victim, train driver, family and friends etc.

Spare a thought for the constabulary involved, too, BeeZee. Our local WPC was called out on two successive Christmas Eves when members of the same family had done exactly the identical thing just down the road. I saw her on the day after the second Boxing Day, and despite a brave attempt at gallows humour it was obvious that being first on the scene had had a very traumatic effect on her.

By terrible coincidence there were two further such fatal incidents today on the Thameslink line, one at Luton and one at Preston Park.

I had R3 on in the background while I was posting just now - then it suddenly clicked that the Chopin bombardment has started - so I'm now listening to Swedish Radio P2. At least Through the Night is Chopin free.
