Ron, I think the zero is something to do with Karma, someone might have enabled it. see Features and Options "Karma is a feature that shows the popularity of a member. Members, if allowed, can 'applaud' or 'smite' other members, which is how their popularity is calculated. You can change the number of posts needed to have a "karma", the time between smites or applauds, and if administrators have to wait this time as well." I'm not sure we need this feature since I know I'm the most popular person here

Mods don't have full admin. rights, Andy: that section doesn't show up as available.

Man with ladders, but no great desire to use them says get second opinion from someone not interested in doing the work on the roof but who knows what's what.

George, strikes me that Bryn the Oracle (of buses, roofs and all-sorts-of-things) is right. Get a second opinion (not from the same, ahem, roof artisan coming back to say the same thing )

Thirded, GG: we needed work done on the roof in the last house, and the first cowboy we saw wanted £5000 up-front for preliminary work, with a proviso that it was only an estimate: the second wanted half that. I asked a couple of local estate agents who they'd recommend, and they both came up with the same small local firm: he was up the next day, poking and scraping about, and warned that he had a six-week waiting list as he looked at this and that. His fee - not an estimate - was just under a quarter of the original: I asked around to see if I could find anyone he'd worked for, and found three, all with glowing reports. I happily waited the six weeks and was very impressed with the work done.
I realise that time is probably of the essence, but would strongly advise you to ask around further and double-check credentials....

Thank you for wise advice, all. I will be getting a second opinion but I have a sort of sinking feeling that the man with the ladder, who was from a NFRC registered firm, may possibly turn out to be right.
The idea of asking a couple of estate agents who they would recommend sounds a good idea. I hadn't thought of that one. Thanks for that, Ron.

I rang my other friend in St. Albans to see if she could recommend anyone for you, but up to now she's never needed a roofer. She did say though, if you ever need a plumber she knows a really good one!

If they're not giving written reports, you should always take copious notes, and ask for the exact details of why you should need a new roof: is it structurally unsound? Do joists need replacing? Don't give them any leads at all on this, let them come up with their own reasons. At the end you should ask for an explanation of why the whole thing should need to be redone if there's only water ingress at one point, should the need for replacement be specified. If anyone adds an apparently critical reason for more expense that nobody else mentions, then I'd be very wary of them indeed, GG.
Is it something that must be done ASAP, or could it be protected with tarps until the work can be done?

Just a thought, George, you have checked out their registration with the NFRC, haven't you? They probably are indeed registered, but bogus claims are not exactly unknown.

I did check yes, Bryn. The internet is a wonderful thing. I'm even becoming an expert on the arcane differences between the 'National Federation of Roofing Contractors' and the 'Confederation of Roofing Contractors'. It's a whole different world up there on the roof. Unfortunately there isn't a magazine called 'What Roofer', or even 'What Tiler' <erf, snerf>.

Brings back memories of puting up my television, FM and DAB aerials, over the years. Can't get a ladder to the apex to get up there that way these days (an extension over the garage removed the footing for the ladder). I keep meaning to get a long roof ladder for when the aerials need attention, but I am not so sure I would be so happy up there these days, even with a safety rope tied to the chimney stack.
