DB,  you must have been listening to the wrong Butler work. I believe that MJ has found another piece by this esteemed composer most beneficial in assisting her to doze off ... Wink Grin

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

Oooh, grumpy old rant.  Besides having slept till lunchtime and missed the opportunity to go the lunchtime Prom (partly caused by my putting off going to bed for a couple of hours after getting home from the Proms last night, due to somebody in the block opposite mine having a VERY loud party with all their windows open  Angry) I just turned on the telly and started channel-hopping on Freeview, and guess what, on QVC they're doing a feature on CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEAS.  I am not joking.

Two minor ranticules:

I was working until 3 this morning and then at 8 the phone rang. I dragged myself to the phone and it was a voice-text message telling me robotically that my new wireless internet account would be activated at midnight tonight and all necessary equipment would be delivered by 7 tomorrow evening. (Members might remember that I've been squeezing myself into the neighbours' bandwidth while at home for the past year, but I thought it was about time we had something here that was a bit more dependable and doesn't just work in the corner of one room and sometimes disappear for days on end).

Yesterday I popped into my office to collect my mail (lest that seem insanely keen, this included some CDs I'd ordered!) and see if there was anything I urgently needed to think about before going back "properly" later in the week, and I found a note from the department technician, who had been in my room while I was away and tested all the electrical plugs and put stickers on them (and there are quite a few, given that I store all my electronic music gear there on the grounds that it's safer than at home). There was a note alerting me to the fact that many of the power plugs there were Continental ones and that these should be taken off and replaced by UK ones because they're "less safe". I wonder if the population of the rest of Europe is aware that their power plugs are lethal and only here in the UK do we have safe ones.  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

My sympathy to you Mr. Richard Barret.
I had a few problems with continental and British plugs, not that I know anything about them.
Once when we were coming from USA to Wales I decided that I will change plugs on electic appliances myself. You can only imagine how sparks were flying. I nearly killed myself and almost made a fire. After that we called electrician.

Also I should thank you lucky stars that you don't have a crazy friend like me who get mixed up with a new phone and calling you at 4:30 Sunday morning.

Strangely enough my friend does not remember me calling him. He was so surprised when I told him. I remember distinctly that he picked up the phone.

Do you think he is he telling the truth? I cannot decide.

Well, if your friend isn't upset then I would think you have nothing to worry about, tp. Maybe your friend was half-asleep at the time and forgot about the call.

I am upset. I defeloped infection, did not feel well from this morning. I thought it will go away, but it became worse and worse.
By 6 o'clock I had to run to my doctor friend. What would I do without my friends? Medical help is so basic here, but who am I to complain. Even to get an appointment to GP is a problem. They are booked and busy.

She gave me from her medical supply some medicine and told me what to do.
I am feeling a little better, but with all this frantic activity I forgot about my rehearsal.
A few minuts ago I got a call from my choire director. I am rapped in warm wooly things and cannot go  into  cool evening.
I never did anything like that before. I only hope that I will feel better tomorrow.
Tomorrow they have rehearsal again at 8 in the evening. Everybody is trying so hard and I let them down.

 Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry

And who knows if I will be better tomorrow. I do feel better right now, but have to keep warm and drink a lot.

I went to Selfridges last week to get my suitcase repaired (it was my first "proper" ie expensive suitcase and I'm never going back to cheap ones - the man in the luggage department was absolutely brilliant and ended up replacing my slightly battered case with a new one).  I had a wander around looking for ways to fritter away my ducats, and saw that they have already opened their Christmas shop.  Shocking.

I was in a National Trust shop well over a month ago and they were selling Christmas cards then Shocked They did apologise when we expressed surprise, but said it was imposed on them nationally.

But can you get a 2009 Diary when you have got to the point when you begin to need one? No you can't. Just those 'Mid-2008 to Mid-2009' ones sitting there among the Christmas Cards. Whazzat all about then? Grump and Ha Bumhug, say I.

I did notice last year, George, that WH Smith brought forward the release date of their 2008 diaries.  Previously it had always been late October or thereabouts.  Last year I am sure I was able to get one in early September, as soon as all the "Back to School" stuff (inc. academic-year diaries) had cleared.  I hope they do the same this year, preferably before the Royal Opera's booking period 2 comes on sale.

I already have tickets for 22 concerts in 2009  Shocked

Anyhow, today's grumpy rant: I was supposed to have tickets to a 23rd concert in 2009 by now.  Subscribed yesterday to the Southbank Centre as a paid-up member, just to get priority booking for this concert (the Anna Netrebko/Dmitri Hvorostovsky extravaganza in May 2009) for friends and self.  After ages trying to get through their website, multiple kickings-off their phone line, and 15 minutes in a queue listening to their very loud and tinny hold music, I got through to a box office person and was told that there was a problem with the opening of booking and that members' booking wasn't going to open for at least another week Angry And yet their website is still saying members today, public next Monday Angry (and the first piece of Southbank Centre publicity to mention this concert originally said it was going to open for booking on 1st June - I phoned them then as well...)
