No, I'm not a complete idiot. I'm only a halfwit. In fact I'm actually a catfish.

For some reason I had a mental image of Bryn behind the wheel of his bus looking something like Dr Phil Harding, 'imoff Time Team. But he turns out to be much more Roman Emperor than that.

It was a great do and I'd be up for another. It was all jolly civilised really and nobody should believe these stories about autoharp trashing the place with a Marc-Andre Hamelin impression - where's the photographic evidence for that ? Many thanks to Ollie for the prezzie and to Ian and others for setting up the occasion !

Gosh autoharp you have reminded me, I forgot to thank ollie. THANKS OLLIE for the pressie. hooooooooooon

It was good to meet you autoharp, I do hope it happens again.. it was quite surreal wasn't it?

Possibly one of the best lines was when George arrived and introduced himself by saying 'Hello, I'm maest'.
BUT, I'm afraid, George - you were the only one I 'recognised ' immediately - you were exactly how I thought you would be !!

I have a picture of you autoharp... do you want me to post it? I won't unless you actually say 'Yes'!

Roll on the next one I say  Grin Cheesy Kiss

You think so? He's Roger Scruton, conservative philosopher and also writer on fox-hunting, spokesman for the tobacco industry, and occasional neo-tonal composer. And he wrote a book called The Aesthetics of Music, very reactionary stuff, though not unintelligent. I don't know what instrument he plays.

He composes, after a fashion. He believes himself to be a philospher. I do, however, have it on good authority that he is an inspiring teacher.

I never heard of him. Mr tp also did not know him. I don't think I like any spokesman for tobacco industry or fox-hunting.
What is neo-tonal? Is it like in 19th century music?
I suppose he teaches philosophy in Oxford.

No, nothing like as good, usually a pale parody of archaic styles with none of the driving force that they possessed in their own time.

I suppose he teaches philosophy in Oxford.

He was at Cambridge, then for a long time at Birkbeck College in London, then went to the US in the 1990s, where he has been for some time.

He also used to appear on Radio 4's The Moral Maze (when their other rent-a-quote right-winger, David Starkey, was not available) giving lots of spiel to do with antiquated moralism, supporting the death penalty, and so on. Sad

Bringing this thread back on-topic, I seem to recall comments about 'Is that a chalumeau in your pocket, or are you just pleased to see me?'
