The text is black on a black background; you can drag your mouse over the screen or hit ctrl+a, or select "select all" in the edit menu (or "view source" somewhere else) to see it.

Death sentence upheld for medics in Libya
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/europe/article2058934.ece

This is absolutely terrible.  (The judge, from what I know, refused to hear evidence from western scientists and health experts when they tried to intervene; it doesn't seem to me that the article is bringing out just how horrific the whole affair is, but maybe everyone in the UK already knows?)

I don't doubt that in the end a deal will be cut, but they're essentially holding the medics to ransom at this stage.  Makes me sick to think about.

Also in the news:

Al-Qaida's deputy leader threatens retaliation for Rushdie's knighthood
http://politics.guardian.co.uk/terrorism/story/0,,2123446,00.html

This is just a farce.  A very serious and real farce, but farce nonetheless.

(amusing aside that the British Foreign Office refer to the dictator (as opposed to writer) of the qu'ran as "the prophet Muhammad".)

Agreed.  Sickening and farcical.

With regard to the medics, I hope a deal is struck soon because to have this horror hanging over them is disgraceful.  Interesting that they don't use the term compensation because this implies guilt.

Well they don't *want* to, unless I've misread.  But they're still haggling over that.  BAH.

I hate packing to go away. Here I am, tapping away at my computer, looking for threads to post on when I should be drying up and stuffing my bag full of clothes.

Actually it's funny you should mention that...
There was a time when I was drinking rather a lot (averaging something like 5 bottles of wine a week - conservative estimate). The love of a good woman (or girl, as she self-identifies) followed by a traumatic experience sorted me out, but I'm cautious about how much I drink - I have to be strict with myself.

Actually that sounds really bad doesn't it?
I was that bad, but I'm not that bad at all any more. It's only during long dark nights of the soul that I worry

The worse point was when I cut down to 2 units a day and every time I walked past a pub, I felt it sucking me in. It was like I had this little voice in my head saying 'I want a pint I want a pint I want a pint I want a pint'.
Thank god that passed.
Because I drive nearly everywhere I hardly drink at all now, and when I do, because my tolerance is so much lower than it was, I tend to drink less (partly it's a matter of my stomach not managing the sheer volume of liquid).
I had one rather scary experience a year and a half ago on the anniversary of being mugged where I drank too much whisky, passed out and vomited (in that order). After that I promised myself never to let go like that ever again.
Well this is cheery.

What I want now more than anything is a packet of crisps. But my doctor told me to cut down on salt (high blood pressure) and I haven't got any in the house.  Embarrassed

Do so and you'll have a friend for life, tb, even though you will have led me from the path of righteousness even unto wicked ways.  Undecided

PS

I've never fully understood your signature about Robin ordering 400 chocolate bars. I don't remember seeing that in any of the episodes.

OK, almost packed now.
Just got some sandwiches to make and then I'm done (also I'm loading my iPod up with goodies: the new Ferneyhough choral CD and a recording of a workshop done by Ensemble Exposé of an unhatched project called Significant Others which I haven't listened to since it was recorded in November 2003...)
Bag's a bit full and everything else will have to go in a plastic bag (the bottle of champagne in the bag doesn't really help matters) but it'll do.
