Oh is THAT what 'bangs' are, or is. I've never bothered to stop and find out before but just filled in my own mental image (which turns out to be wrong) and carried on reading. But this is all very unsettling. 'Bangs' for a fringe doesn't seem right somehow. It's not... plural enough for a start. I assumed it/they were the result of one of those mysterious things that girls can do with elastic bands or with those funny, you know, things... (crunchies?). I'm not sure I can cope with this. In fact, come to think of it, I'm still not convinced by 'bangs' = 'fringe'. Take this jolly nice looking chap for example... <Sigh> No elastic bands involved here but which bit is/are the 'bangs'? Is it really the fringe bit? Or the long bits either side... tumbling sensually and gently caressing her perfectly sculpted...<sorry, drifted for a moment there>?

Scrunchies,George. x I always understood "bangs" to be hair framing the face - i.e. fringe or (sic) "bits down the side". Silly Americanism. I never understood why they were so called.

I always thought 'bangs' were those bits that hang down round the face when the rest of the hair is up. But Google images tells me I know nothing and that the hair can be all over the place and still qualify. How are we to find, in such a world, order and sense?

Oh right, scrunchies! Thanks Mills . There are so many things about the bits and pieces that accompany the eternal feminine that are still, and probably now always will be, a mystery to me... This is more what I (mistakenly) thought 'bangs' were. I am prepared to accept my error but, in mitigation, I would submit to the court that these look much more 'bangsy' than a fringe ever does.

...how long, do you think, before they change this bit? Hairstyles that feature fringes or bangs have come and gone out of fashion as frequently as other hairstyles, and they can be worn in any number of styles. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, poofy, curly, teased fringes were in fashion.

Martle, how many times have I told you? The `bangs` are my disguise so that I don`t get swamped by my adoring public at the fresh fish counter at Tesco. Sigh.

This board is a mine of information. It is indeed, Mort. I never knew that the things that turn out to be called paladin bins were called paladin bins until this morning. Well, I did know that things called paladin bins would be called paladin bins. It's just that I didn't know that there were things called paladin bins, or which those things were, if there were such things.
