That's why I find "Modernism" such an odd term. It seems to be used of certain artistic trends from 1900. Which as you say isn't that modern.
I find that in music studies. Modernism in music. such a general term.

I thought it was wrong of this goverment to allow Polish emigres to vote for their country's General Election. As the Poles who are in this country now, they should only vote here.

Unless they take British citizenship, they can only vote in local, not general elections in the UK I think. So long as they retain Polish citizenship, why should they not be bale to vote there? Many intend to return in the long run.

It refers to the time when 'newness' became an important quality in art. I think you could certainly argue that composers, painters, sculptors, writers and filmmakers in the first decades of the 20th century were more concerned with innovation and with 'making it new' than their counterparts today, and in that sense Modernism seems an accurate term (perhaps best read as 'Modern-ism', if you see what I mean).

Ahem, not wishing to lower the tone of these hallowed cyber halls, but I couldn`t think of anywhere else to post this. Apparently, according to Michael Palin, there is now an increasing trend among German males to pee sitting down. Lord knows what research was conducted to establish this fascinating fact, but I am left thinking "Why". Not that I begrudge chaps a change of routine in hum drum activities but ....why? And why German males? Or is this just the tip of the iceberg As you were.

an increasing trend among German males I'm not one myself of course, but I did pick up the habit while I was there, on account of not having to worry about stray drips finding their way onto the nice clean floor, if you must know.

Errm... http://mpra.ub.uni-muenchen.de/856/01/MPRA_paper_856.pdfIt's actually quite simple. As the only man in the household, it's easier to sit than to try to remember to put the seat back down afterwards and run the risk of female wrath

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

Thank you gentlemen for your helpful insights on this matter. PW, umm, yes, female wrath seems as good a reason as any for adopting the position I`m quite happy to, erm, close the lid on this topic, chaps

Maybe it's just as well I am a female... Well, you barely passed. Odds are in favour that you are actually a female and have never experienced a male rest facility in all it's glory. That, or you're a guy who doesn't get out much. If we were you, we wouldn't be showin' your score off to any of our friends, since they can probably pee way better than you can.I may have failed in the urinal department but I can spell its...
