I've never forgotten a talk given by my old headmistress, where her theme was "If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing badly". She was talking about having a go at painting, or singing, even if you were no good at it. It was a novel idea to me. Later, I asked her if I could give up 6th form Latin. "Why?" she asked. "Because I'm not very good at it." "That's not a good enough reason. People might say "Mary's not very good at Latin". Is that what worries you?" It was, I suppose. I wasn't allowed to give it up. This has stuck with me, but I still HATE being bad at things.

It was Alexandre Dumas who said "Nothing suceeds like success" wasn't it?  When you get on a roll suddenly all your projects are the golden ones.

But he also said "A person who doubts himself is like a man who would enlist in the ranks of his enemies and bear arms against himself. He makes his failure certain by himself being the first person to be convinced of it."  Which is oh so true.

I too hate failing Mary (being bad at something as you say) but I know, to protect myself against failure (disappointment) I do tend to bear arms against myself as quoted above which will then  justify the lack of confidence in myself and the failure.

I think Marcus Aurelius said something about situations being defined by our attitude towards them.

Yes, I think that's what the Dylan lines mean.

I come to conclusion that it doesn't really matter if one has success or he doesn't. Success is ability to go on or simply survive. The most important thing is to learn not to make oneself miserable.

Its all to do with how our minds are at the time of any given situaition. Thats how we deal with things.

Might be those spambots again ? I'm sure that Music and Society didn't have 226 folks online back in October.

Going to have a new sound deck put in my car £150. Can take both MP3 and ipods + cd and radio. If my memory serves me correctly, its a Sony.

Just looking at the Calendar to see who else has upcoming birthdays and I notice that St. Patrick's Day is marked on it but not St. David's Day  Huh  Which coincidentally is also Martle's birthday.  A double celebration then!   Cheesy

I couldn't see how to add it though, and also St. George's Day is not mentioned either (Bryn's birthday as well),  or St. Andrew.  Any chance of adding them in Mods?

Thanks, Antheil.  I have put on St George's Day, being English, which starts a thread in the Welcome Section.  Also Easter Day.  Others can be put on by members.  It strikes me as odd that St Patrick is included, but not Easter.
