Two students considering a religious vocation were having a conversation. "What is similar about the Jesuit and Dominican Orders? " the one asked.

His friend replied, "Well, they were both founded by Spaniards -- St. Dominic for the Dominicans, and St. Ignatius of Loyola for the Jesuits. They were also both founded to combat heresy -- the Dominicans to combat the Albigensians, and the Jesuits to combat the Protestants."

"So what's different about the Jesuit and Dominican Orders then?"

"Met any Albigensians lately?"

Boom!  Boom!

I am suffering the tail end of a bad cold/flu thingy.  I have a very gravelly voice.  As is usual with illnesses of this nature, my voice has dropped a few notes.  Today I can get to bottom A flat!

Quick, someone help me learn Rachmaninov's Vespers!

Is the cold a reason why Russian Basses are so low?  Do they always have niggly little infections?

Tommo, you need at least a bottom D for the Vespas. And I think it's the vodka and ciggies rather than the cold.

I thought it was a bottom Bb.  Anyway, either way I get it, as today I can get the Ab two octaves and a few notes below Middle C.  Don't tell me they get the D nearly 3 octaves below Middle C Huh  Shocked

What are the conventions for using the word 'bottom'.  ( Roll Eyes)  Does it refer to a specific octave?

Blimey, Tommers! I thought you meant the Ab above that. We're impressed.

Sadly, "Normal Tommo" (if ever there were such a thing) can only get the the F which is an octave and a 5th below middle C.  Why this cold has given me an extra 4 and a half tones I haven't the foggiest.  And I'll probably be back to normal tomorrow... Sad

So, I shall drink vodka and grow a long beard tonight, and perhaps do a few cossack spins.

I trust that will be documented for us all to see.

I once asked an expert in vocal techniques about this Russian bass thing and she told me it had a lot to do with the resonant frequencies of the language (which also explains the French penchant for high tenors*), although this of course just shifts the question to another place rather than answering it.

* but not, I presume, the Italian one for castrati.

It is a Bb. The size and shape of Russians may also have something to do with the number of deep basses they produce, and there are theories concerning air temperature, too. The lowest I've sung regularly is the Eb a fourth above, though recently that's been getting weaker than it was. Basses and Bass-Baritones are supposed to require prominent adam's apples, by the way.

I can usually reach the D below the bass stave without too much difficulty, and sometimes the C. Unfortunately I can't comfortably sing much above the violin's bottom G. Cheesy

Not that any of you would ever want to hear me sing anyway. It would be painful for you and peinlich for me.

Goodness me. I'm away for a couple of days and the tone descends further than Tommo's cold-ridden voice!  Shocked

Of course, it would have remained on a level at least as elevated as Messiaen's trousers if you'd been around all this time, I'm sure.  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Wink

Isn't this a lovely photo

I've decided to put off going to Durham until tomorrow.
Realised that I'd left it so late that I would have to catch the 9pm train (gets in at 11pm - involves a run to the bus or a 40 minutes walk), my boss wants to meet me tomorrow, and I had food to finish off here that won't be in a friendly state when I return.
Went into work this afternoon and found it a really positive experience (sorry, what?  Shocked).
I feel like I've had my head up a proverbial orifice for the last few days - incredibly self-involved and not really dealing with work issues that are quite simple to resolve. Getting into work (and more importantly out of my flat) gave me some kind of perspective.
I'll be staying up in Durham until the weekend and really break the back of these corrections.
