Euro 2008 football begins on Friday. Being held in Austria and Switzerland with the final in Austria, so the BBC has decided to use Mozart's Jupiter Symphony as the theme tune. So, whose version will they be using ? Mackerras ? Harnoncourt ? Well, no. Actually it will be played by trip - hop combo UNKLE. Rock me Amadeus.

I can honestly say I didn't know about Euro 2008 until someone mentioned it on the phone today. As an aside, I think it's about time that motorised vehicles no longer need to be preceded by a man carrying a red flag.

Perhaps footie fans who wouldn't ordinarily listen to Wolfie will have their appetites whetted? Last time anything happened like this was the Three Tenors (does that make them The Thirties?) but what about classical music being adopted in fields other than football? any instances (other than commercials)?

My daughters first heard such music as 'Pastoral ' Symphony as young as about 4 on their story tapes that they played at bedtime and in the car.. Good versions too!

I haven't heard it, but in the BBC's defence Austria does at least have a vibrant 'trip hop' electronica scene (though UNKLE are English). ITVs coverage will feature Mozart - Queen Of The Night performed by soprano Natasha Marsh. Poor old Swittzerland eh?! Might Channel 5 have chosen Holliger?!!

Just logged on for a second, thought I'd catch up with a little bit of recent posts and now it's nearly 3am... Lovely messages on the Happy Birthday thread. Thank you all. In reply to something elsewhere, I thought I'd just say that my ex described me as a feminist once and I've never been more flattered. Well, that's not quite true but it really did make my day. And, in case anyone's interested, I'm over her.

Presumably that's because classical music is outdated, desperately uncool and no one listens to it any more.

Wow, inky.
I watched all the way through to see if it cocked its leg, but was amazed at the jumping at the end.
