Good luck Milly, especially with maintaining all the emotional (and physical) energy you'll need to make this situation work.

Ron is right. You have the heart of a born Mum. I too, hope the diagnosis is nothing serious, and that the lad gets himself sorted. It really grieves me to see the potential of a youngster like that piffed away (I'm hoping to get a voluntary job working with young people in the near future).

I wish you lived nearer, Kitty!  Grin

Thanks Richard. My biggest problem will be the understanding bit.  He has a completely different mind-set to the rest of us and has no focus or motivation.  I'm going to try and get on to his wavelength but I'll be honest and say it won't be easy.  He's told me he doesn't want to go out tonight which is good.  That was another worry of mine - him staying out till the early hours and maybe coming back rat***ed.  However, so far so good.

I do hope it all goes well, Milly. You've taken on a lot, but I'm sure you're right to do so in the circumstances, so long as you have made it absolutely clear it's a temporary arrangement. As you say, if he gets too comfortable he may be hard to shift.

Milly,

All day I've been meaning to come back and say maybe he has Glandular Fever, that is so common in youngsters. Hope all well, thinking of you.

It definitely isn't glandular fever.  I've had that and so has my son.  He isn't ill enough.  This is a definite hard lump on the side of his neck.  Not the usual glands on either side of the throat.  The lumps follow the lymph down his left arm.  He has three altogether. They're all the same, round and hard.

It's going well up to now.  All unpacked, fed, settled.  He's just been for a run down the beach for 30 minutes.  He says he's trying to get fit for an army medical.  He seems to really want to join up.  We'll have to see.

If it were glandular fever, then surely the last thing he'd be doing would be running at all, Mills, let alone for half an hour: but if he is that keen, rather than just hoping to make a good impression, then that's a plus in itself.

I mourn the death of the fun waffle thread. There was a time when if an amusing tease was posted  the other people on the thread reacted accordingly. Now it is ignored, deliberately. The general atmosphere is now like an agony aunt's page in some newspaper.

Where is the fun? the llamas, the ducks, the parties, the hoon, the humour?

I no longer have interest in this thread that I started all those posts ago.

Sad .

A, I think many of us feel the need of a place to talk about things that don't fit into any particular category, to drift from subject to subject as normal conversation usually does. The title of this thread indicates that that's its purpose. It doesn't indicate "humour" in any way, at least not to me, though of course there's no reason why the "humorous" things shouldn't be included, since anything can be waffle.

It's worth remembering that with the proliferation of threads here now, there are other places for humour, too, A, and that waffle quite often appears on other threads for a spell, as well as this dedicated one: the board has always been more dynamically free-form than strictly proscribed in this respect.

I'm sure that most members find themselves drifting in and out of interest or sympathy with the predominant subjects occasionally. It's the way things work in a forum: one major topic is replaced by another, and there will be times when the general flow is not to certain members' personal tastes. It certainly happens to me, especially, for example, when there's a London meet-up, and the board becomes almost totally metro-centric for days: but such times soon pass.

We have to learn to go with the flow.....

That's what I think.  However, he said it was a run - I think it might have been more of a walk.  The doctor this morning said they are raised lymph nodes in an unusual place and therefore they're going to be investigated.

He does seem really keen on joining up but we'll have to see how this goes now.  He is definitely under the weather and is cold all the time.

A, with regard to fun threads, they seem to have migrated to the Funny Haha room and the humorous news story threads.  The waffle thread with ducks and llamas seems to have evolved to just ordinary waffle.  Although that was hilarious at the time, I don't think it could have gone on for ever.

Apologies for spilling out my problems in particular.  I won't do it any more if it's making people miserable.

For goodness' sake, Milly, that's one of the reasons we're here - to listen. I suppose if problems seem big enough, they could migrate to "Meeting Life's Challenges and Upsets", but there's no reason at all why they shouldn't be mentioned here as far as I can see - but I'm not a moderator, so maybe I should shut up  Smiley.

Well I suppose I was just looking at it as waffling on....but you're right Mary, definitely the wrong thread.  Perhaps the Mods could shift it over?

No, Mary, please don't shut up. You've anticipated what I was away to say. Waffle seems to have settled down to be the main daily conversation thread, and as such, carries a wide range of subjects, many of which also now have dedicated threads, but the boundaries between them are blurred. The Challenges and Upsets thread has tended to be for one-off matters, rather than for ongoing situations: there are other areas for those who are after undiluted humour, but funnies still appear here too: it appears to be the main stream of consciousness for the community, so we're likely to see all sorts of subjects raised.

I could try and split-off what posts I can to the C and U thread, but we may find that it leaves awkward gaps in the flow here....
