Hi t-p
Not sure if you mean the Top Cat lyrics when you ask about Nabokov ? But if so the answer is that I doubt he was the composer. It is from a perenially popular cartoon series from 1960s USA. I'm glad your rehearsals went well tonight.

Since it would be on topic to post this on the off topic replies thread, it will have to go here. Anybody else have extreme difficulty in deciphering these lyrics over years and years of exposure to them ?
The most effectual Top Cat!
Oh, are those the words? I always heard it as 'homosexual', although it was unlikely that a prime-time childrens' cartoon from the States in the 60s would feature such a character, even though he did seem to have exclusively male friends. I, too, had problems with that fourth line, which sounded to me like 'pro-vi-ding it's working to tea' - very poor enunciation from the vocalists, obviously.

I thought if I waited long enough I'd come across someone who knew how it went. Hadn't expected it to take forty five years though. Thank you BobbyZ, or may I get to call you Bee.Zee. Another one ticked off the list. Bee.Zee is fine George. But Martle deserves credit for solving the puzzle too, it was the post of TC on the off topic thread that prompted me to search for the wretched lyrics.

Anybody else have extreme difficulty in deciphering these lyrics over years and years of exposure to them ? Especially the fourth line which I always thought had something to do with Whittington D.
Top Cat! The most effectual Top Cat! Who's intellectual close friends get to call him T.C. Providing it's with dignity.
Oh, is that how it goes! My little brother and I always had to wing it when singing along with that bit. " Top Cat!The most erffnnn..l Top Cat!Who snick fnerd de der ... call him TCPfner der der ... T." I thought if I waited long enough I'd come across someone who knew how it went. Ah, but will you be able to replace the clever 'winging-it words' so securely stored in your memory with the correct but newly-discovered alternative? As a child I was convinced there was a Bananarama song which contained the statement: 'Cos I'm guilty, guilty, Guilty as a cocoa bean' and even though I realised quite a few years ago now what the real words must be, I've never been able to convince my brain to process it that way.

The city is a process which always veers away from the form envisaged and desired, ... whose revenge upon its architects and planners undoes every dream of mastery. It is [also] one of the sites where Dasein is assigned the impossible task of putting right what can never be put right. - Rob Lapsley

Loins girded by that, now it's onwards and upwards to finding what the hell 'Puff the Magic Dragon" was all about.

Then there was Custard, although all he seemed to do was snigger at the mishaps that befell Roobarb.

The song is believed by many to refer to smoking marijuana, due to references to paper, dragon ("draggin'"), puff (smoke), traveling "along the cherry lane" (the burning ember of a cigarette or joint is called a cherry, and moves up the cigarette's length as it burns), and Hanalei (Honahlee) is a town in Hawaii known for marijuana use. This theory led to the song becoming a hippie anthem. The authors of the song have repeatedly and vehemently denied any intentional drug reference

Did anyone see this on their newspage today?
BERLIN (Reuters) - A four-year-old cat in Germany called Bonny has survived after being walled in beneath a bathtub for seven weeks, its owner said on Tuesday.
"It's a miracle," said Monika Hoppert, a 60-year-old widow from the western town of Stadthagen. "I'm a strong believer, I think she must have had a guardian angel. I'm so happy."
Bonny disappeared on June 19 while workmen were replacing pipes in the block of flats where Hoppert lives. The black cat was last seen in a neighbouring apartment, where the cladding around a bathtub had been removed.
Just before the tub was sealed up again, Bonny had probably crept underneath, Hoppert said.
By the time the neighbour heard Bonny's plaintive meowing from behind the tiles on August 8, the cat's weight had dropped from 6 kg to 2 kg (from 3 lb to 1 lb).
"I couldn't believe it. But when I got down there, I knew it was my cat because they all have their own voice," said Hoppert.
Bonny was so weak the vet recommended she be put down. But Hoppert nursed her back to health with watered down kitten food.
"She's almost back to normal now. This morning was the first time she'd jumped onto my bed again," Hoppert said.
