who played us out down the aisle at the end with a roof-raising rendition of the toccata from Messiaen's Dieu Parmi Nous

Oh god yes. I'd love that. Can I have that at my wedding please?

I've been pestered to join Facebook and I've done so under my real name.  I've heard some security horror stories.  What's to worry about?  Anyone on here on it and had any problems?

I've been on it for a few years and have had no problems. I know a few people who have had their accounts 'hacked', though the worst that seems to happen is that they send out junk messages to everyone that they've added as friends.
As long as you control what you put on there, you should be ok I think.

I thought "Dieu parmi Nous" was the toccata from La Nativité du Seigneur.

I thought "Dieu parmi Nous" was the toccata from La Nativité du Seigneur.

This was the second half of Dieu parmi Nous which IIRC is marked toccata.

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

I've been on there a couple of years and likewise haven't had any real problems.  There was one bloke who seems ot have something against Barenboim who set up an account under the name Daniel Barenboim and sent out friend requests to those who'd said they'd be attending the East-West Divan concert, but since his friend request was full of barmy links that he'd already been spamming all over the place at TOP, it was fairly easy to see thorugh, and I reported it and the account was deleted.

You can block people from searching for you (but you have to know they are on facebook first), I know you've said you've had problems with a certain individual in the past, so it may be worth having a pre-emptive look for them, and adding them to your blocked list.

Oh, and feel free to add me as a friend if you so wish.  There aren't that many by my name on there, and one or two of my friends should give the game away in any case.

I find Facebook unfamiliar and confusing. I thought it might be interesting to see whether any old school friends were to be found there but either they aren't or I don't know what the term "class year" means, I mean I attended school for several years of course - which of those is my "class year"? I can't say this issue has concerned me for more than a minute or two though.

"Class year" in American-speak refers to the year you graduated (or would have expected to graduate).  For example, I started school thinking I would have been graduating in 1987 but skipped forward a year, so I was in the class of 1986.  Then I took a year off before university (which is 4 years for a typical undergraduate degree in the US), so rather than joining the class of 1990 I joined the class of 1991.  I had a friend who started off with me in the class of 1991, but took a year off in the middle of her degree and ended up graduating with the class of 1992.  Alles klar?

Thanks. I wonder why that isn't explained somewhere on the site though. Never mind. I think I'll have another look now.

Edit: I've looked at 1978 (when I would in the normal run of things have left secondary school), 1977 (when I actually did, for similar reasons to you) and 1976 (when a lot of my classmates did) and only found two names I recognise and I couldn't say they were friends as such. That's me finished with Facebook then I suppose!

Oooh, let's see now - Americans assuming everyone in the world uses the same terminology as themselves and not even imagining they would need to explain it to a ferrner?  Perish the thought.   Grin

It works the other way around too - trying to explain to friends in the US how to dial my phone number is so tedious.  I have to spell it out in baby steps.  Wave a plus-sign at them, or things in parentheses, and they shut down with bafflement.

Of course that'll all change with President Obama...   Roll Eyes   Smiley

If there are particular people you want to find it's best looking for them by name or through mutual friends you've already found - not everyone bothers to enter their full school details.

Then again, it may be best to step away from facebook - I only joined recently and it takes up MUCH too much of my time.  Almost as much as this site!

I was at a school whee you could leave at the end of the fifth form, or after A-levels, 2 years later, at the end of the sixth-form.

Some of my friends left early and I left late.  Do we have different class years, or should I say I am in the class of 1797 and the class of 1799?

Oh dear.  I think I may be shutting down with bafflement.
