Great Scot! Super news. I wonder how they tempted away from Seattle? I wonder if he will find some opening to conduct his beloved Wagner opera scores in the UK somewhere?

Excellent news! The orchestra has already done well under Ilan Volkov; under Donald Runnicles, it can surely only develop farther and achieve yet greater things.
Best,
Alistair

Great Scot! Super news. I wonder how they tempted away from Seattle? It's San Francisco Opera, isn't it, Reiner? Which makes it even more baffling on the face of it, although I think he's been making noises about wanting to move back to Scotland, or at least the UK.

First off, wonderful news. I had hoped this might happen when I heard Volkov was leaving but in truth I didn't think it likely, even though he has stated he wants to come back to Scotland. I think I've read that there are tensions between Runnicles and new boss of SF opera which may have contributed to his decision (made a little while ago) to leave there. My only regret: that the orchestra aren't over on this side of the country more often (and that it's not until 2009). Martle - I don't really see why this is in any way baffling - the BBCSSO are a very fine orchestra and play magnificently for Runnicles and the chemistry between them is obvious in concert. The only reason I doubted this was whether they would be able to afford him. If he's cut them a deal, the desire to work in Scotland a bit more often is a pretty plausible explanation. Indeed,Tam. But I cannot quite believe that the deal does not involve a pay-cut. Although of course that doesn't preclude the possibility of other 'perks' etc. - how interesting it would be to know! Anyway, it's sort of refreshing to see someone following their lights, as distinct from (as in this case it surely must be) following their ego or investment portfolio.

I was going to make a sort of predictable comment about 'Now that really is a Barrington-Coupe' but then I thought better of it. Oh dear, I just did.

It is San Fran, yes, and I believe his contract's up and they didn't offer to renew it (I don't know why not). The BBC SO will regard this as very bad timing - apparently they've been trying to get Runnicles for years, but he's always been under contract elsewhere, and they now have Belohlavek signed up till 2011. PS hh, are you turning into Alistair?

PS hh, are you turning into Alistair? I don't think so, though I have been feeling a bit strange this morning... So, I'll veer back on-topic (or at least near it) with a question: how is Runnicles on contemporary music?

I don't know, really. I was wondering about that. I don't think he's going to be a Volkov, exactly, is he! He did do a pretty impressive job of the premiere of Robin Holloway's Symphony at the Proms back in 2000, but to be honest that's more in the Wagner line than the Jonathan Harvey line, so not too surprising, I suppose.
