Ye gods, Reiner! That was fan-flipping-tastic! I watched the 'official' film clip afterwards and the difference in energy was all to do with the music.

That's a great clip Marty, it certainly brought a smile to my face I wonder what happened to Donald O'Connor, I had forgotten about him until you mentioned his name. It is said that Donald O'Connor was hospitalized for a week for exhaustion after shooting this number. It is also said that this song is a near-plagiarism of Cole Porter's "Be a Clown": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQspyNd-QZ4When Irving Berlin visited the set of "Singin' in the Rain" he asked in a very suspicious tone: "Who wrote that song?"

But Pim, those two songs are pretty different essentially! Same tempo (ish), same scansion for the first two lines... but that's about it. And anyway, O'Connor is so much better at knockabout than Kelly (let alone Garland ). Nice clip, though!

Pim, I am SO glad that you posted that clip. A few months ago I had a rather, er, animated discussion with someone about the songs (Make 'em laugh' and 'Be a Clown') the resemblance twixt them and which song came from which film. I now have the evidence to rest my case! Phew. Many thanks Ah, just seen Martle's post. Well, I don't know nuffink cos I don't 'ave musicians ears But they do sound pretty similar to my shell-likes... However, as far as performance is concerned, my vote has to go to O'Connor

Just found this thread, now working my way through these wonderful clips! I've always loved this routine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAlNqi-iFbc&feature=related(the voice at the end is wrong though isn't it?!)

Oh my gosh, yes, MJ! But maybe it's a technical problem? It sounds as though the voice has been slowed down, almost to point of distortion. Unless, of course, that was intended - to indicate gloom that the audience was less than receptive? Just an idle thought. Great clip though, MJ! Ta everso

Marilyn Monroe is one of my heroines, I have her cds and have just discovered this, one of my favourite songs. on Youtube with Donald O'Connor and Mitzi Gaynor. Her phrase "supine" is one I use regularly http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skpfzfWvoKk

OK folks, here's why the two songs sound so similar; the original movie used several existing songs from different sources, all of which needed clearance for inclusion in the film. We had the whole story when we did the stage version in 1983-5 at the Palladium. Forgive me if I forget which way round it was now, but whichever song was chosen for the movie had already been choreographed when it transpired that the rights had been reserved. A song with a shape and rhythm as near as possible was knocked up to replace it. When we repeated the show on tour in 1986-9 the situation was reversed and which ever we'd used the first time round was replaced by the other for contractual reasons. The choreography remained exactly the same....

Oh dear, a new timewaster for me - endless clips of Gene Kelly to watch! This tap-dancing's on roller skates... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aus1PA5-SyI(with French subtitles at first) Reminds me of some brilliant roller-skating by Charlie Chaplin in one of his films. It was set in a department store. I can only find clips from The Rink but this 28 seconds is worth seeing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rqmqvIKB-Y
