I'm not sure what it's like, I sort of picked it at random, but I have a rental dvd to watch over the weekend called Cover Girl starring Rita Hayworth and Gene Kelly (1944). Hopefull it will provide some escapist fantasy and some great dancing

Anna,
I've seen that film, long time ago, Phil Silvers is also in it, dancing and playing piano. My little song database here lists 7 songs but I don't recognise any of the titles as great songs, except maybe Long Ago And Faraway but can't remember the tune.

John,
I don't think there are any great (i.e. 'hit' songs) in it but as the weather forecast is dire - it's been like a Winters day here, totally freezing and a wind to cut you in half - I think it'll be a fun thing to watch whilst cwtched up in the warmth. And of course, all those films have Happy Endings! I love them.

I didn't know we had this thread until just now! Great stuff. It inspired me to hunt down this classic, the fabbo Donald O'Connor in Make 'em Laugh from Singing in the Rain. Its virtuosity, as well as its humour and energy, have me in stitches every time without fail. It's also quite a feat of cinematography - just see how few 'cuts' there are! 'Musical Slapstck at its Finest!' - The Daily Martle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FW02c5UNGl0Edited for embarrassingly incorrect apostrophes. Edit 2: for having edited out the 's's and not the apostrophes. You know when you just have to get it right?

That's a great clip Marty, it certainly brought a smile to my face I wonder what happened to Donald O'Connor, I had forgotten about him until you mentioned his name. It took me a bit of searching to re-find this thread, perhaps it should be in Coffee Bar?

The Lindy-Hop sequence in HELLZAPOPPIN' was originally choreographed by Frankie Manning to the Goodman Orchestra's version of Jumpin' At The Woodside. However, the film's producers decided they either didn't want, or couldn't afford Goodman and his orchestra - so they had a studio band record some new music written to fit the phrase-lengths of Goodman's recording. Here's that legendary Lindy routine, with the Goodman track lovingly restored in place of what was released with the movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdWgHtTau48Frankie Manning is the guy in the dungarees in this clip - anyone else ever dreamed of being able to dance like that?
