About once a week the BBC messageboards seem to be closed for 'essential maintenance' or simply not responding, with no explanation..

As they are the main reason I go on the internet I find this frustrating to say the least.

As I don't have this problem with any other web-site I am puzzled. One would suppose the BBC to be using good quality software. Doesn anyone know why their message boards are out of action so often?

This would appear to be a breakdown rather than scheduled work, Smits: the error-board message which appears is quite different to the maintenance one. This tends to happen when the BBC site as a whole is experiencing a higher than average number of hits, usually for a sporting reason, and perhaps today not totally unconnected with events occuring rather less than a mile from where I'm sitting right now, in Carnoustie. (There are on-line feeds for the entire event, and even though it seems as if half the planet has descended upon our tiny town, it's only about 200,000. Interest in the Open is very much world-wide, however, so many of the hits will be coming from outside the UK.)

Much of the camera-work is being done remotely from a balloon which is sitting over the town, incidentally. If you've ever wanted to know what sort of place I live in, tune-in on the off-chance that there's an aerial view: you'll not see Castle Dough, which is out of shot, but you might get the odd good view of the toon, the beach, the coast and the hills beyond on this side, and the Kingdom of Fife and St Andrews on the other.

Have you used Google Earth at all?  I told ff about it on the other board and we had a look at each other.  She could even see my car in the drive!  Big brother eh?

I love Google Earth. Managed to find the location of my Mum's house, but the picture is all blur Embarrassed , I also managed to find where I live, and where my son lives. Beautifully clear and slightly nostalgic.

He doesn't ZOOM IN, does He??!! Cripes! Gosh! Blimey! I'd better tidy up, take the bottles down to the recycling place and hide those magazines. Can you ask him to ZOOM at a time of your own convenience or does He just turn up when He feels like it, sort of Father, Son and British Gas?

God comes with a zoom function? One would assume that omniscience would preclude such functionality.

Re Google Earth; have you noticed how there still seem to be areas of the UK that are rather like the 'Here be Dragons' sections of old maps, where there's no detail whatsoever? Such is the case with the location of Castle Dough: Dundee, the Ferry, Monifieth and half of Barry are all there in their full glory, but the other half of Barry and beyond looks like a map by a drunk impressionist. Useless.

In case any relatives of the lady of the house may be visiting the site, may I stress that the 'Here be Dragons' comment is not intended personally. Or aimed at her mother. Thank you.

Anyone here used the google street-view thing?  I've heard it can be very useful for checking out parking times and planning walks.  I don't know if dublin is covered actually...

Grin  Well it just occurred to me that if anyone wanted to pinpoint someone exactly that could be the way to do it - I forgot about omnipresence - being there, everywhere, all the time, at once.

It was my imagination working overtime as usual.  No wonder I get headaches.  Roll Eyes

Re: google earth.  if they release photographs like that to the general public, just imagine of the resolution that the military satellites can get.    Big Brother really is watching you and can tell if your tie isn't on straight as well.   Shocked

That's right.  I've heard that they can read car number plates from outer space.  They can probably tell what colour eyes you have.  If only our CCTV pictures were as good.  Just think of the criminals they'd catch!  When my car was broken into on Preston Station and smashed up....the transport police said that the CCTV wasn't much use because at night the light wasn't good enough.  Roll Eyes<despairingemoticon>

My PC seems to be determined to stop me downloading Google Earth. It keeps asking if I trust this site or something, and am I sure I really want it, and other prophesies of doom. Do I just keep saying I am quite happy, thank you, and download it anyway? It sounds interesting.

I've never heard of it creating problems for anybody, Mary. It's a site that can definitely be trusted. Go ahead and enjoy!
