The new Music Matters message board (on BBC R3MB) is for the Music Matters programme not for "music matters" as some have speculated. This has just been announced on the programme.  Cry

The good news is that Howard Skempton is on the programme now and he's just been talking about one of my favourite composers, Morton Feldman, so I could go and post to my heart's content about Feldman on the new board.  Cheesy

One wonders whether they will actually moderate if we flout it.

However, perhaps the place to go is the CD Review board. After all, anything on CD (or that has ever been on CD) is surely fair game. Indeed, anything ever recorded - why hasn't record x ever been issued on silver disc? That broadcast on Performance on 3 (or any other broadcast) should/shouldn't be released on disc because of these merits/flaws... and so on

regards, Tam

Andy, I only had it on low in the background and missed most of the announcement.  Did he say post requests for what you want to hear or have I totally misheard?

Didn't hear anything about requests Anna.

But it should be quite easy to start a discussion on the board about any composer whatsoever without risking getting it removed for being off-topic:

eg how do the compositions of [insert name of composer] compare with those of Howard Skempton who was on the programme on 17/2/07?  Roll Eyes

No surprises there, Andy.

The "official" R3 boards are now merely places where grateful listeners are supposed to pay thanks - and have their comments read-out on air.  I notice Peter Katin's comments have been grabbed twice as endorsements for the Tchaikoffest.

R_T. May be I am naturally pleased with things because I don't know much.
What do you think could be better?

For anyone wishing to listen to todays Music Matters - although all the details are there it is still playing the previous edition.

As MM is going to be one of the new MBs you would think they could have got it right  Cheesy

Hi T-P

Well, we will know the full detail tomorrow.  As it is, all that we know is that the current message-boards on the BBC-run site are being closed-down (except for the Tchaikovsky board, which continues)...   in their place will be message-boards dedicated to five programs broadcast by R3.  No other kind of discussion will be permitted - not even discussion of other R3 programmes, such as Hear & Now, or The Early Music Show, or BBC Opera broadcasts.

Considering we CAN discuss all those programmes now, and starting from tomorrow we can't - I consider this to be a major backwards step by Radio Three.

I find it quite amazing that a MB will be devoted to a programme which is only on twice a month.  It is alternating with 'Feature' which next week is presented by Tom Robinson.  (Glad to be Gay - now presents regular programme on R6)

I did email the programme yesterday afternoon to say that the Listen Again facility was in fact broadcasting the February 4th edition although saying it was yesterdays but that so far has not been rectified.

Thank you R_T. Today I listened to 'The Iain Burnside Show'. I did not like it. First of all I could not understand him for some weird reason. He seems to talk much about something and I would miss it when he introduced the piece. May be his accent is more difficult for me than other people. Secondly he introduced the most well known pieces.

I am not optimistic at all.

I've made a post on the MM MB called New Music Matters... and referred to Howard Skempton being on the programme, so it's on-topic. I've then invited people to discuss the composers who were on Hear & Now on Saturday. On the other hand it might be simpler to discuss H&N over here.  Sad

Hi Andy

<<The new Music Matters message board is for the Music Matters programme not for "music matters" as some have speculated. >>

This makes sense, though message 1 in the 'Welcome' thread seemed to go to great lengths to keep it ambiguous.  What's needed is a general board like Radio 4's TCIY, not the hi-jacking of a dedicated board.

So it's official, then.  Anyone discussing anything except Jazz, four named programmes or sundry festivals or 'experiences' that get their own temporary boards will be in breach of board rules.  Or is my logic faulty?

Can anybody tell me when CD Masters finishes....thought todays programme was especially good with Vaughan Williams  Sancta Civitas
Beethoven pc no 4 and Prokofiev no 7 - not heard the Prokofiev for some time but think its a fine work a kind of nostalgic look at the past after the masterly 5th and the anquished 6th....was going to post this msge on R3 Msge board but appears as another 1984 casuality - just wonder what will be in its place Huh  Cry

No, I think you have it exactly right.  The question will now come down to how the Mods decide to police this. Anyone with half a brain can see that the new set-up is idiotic beyond all words (otherwise why are we all here, and not there?).  So far it must be said that discussions that bear no relationship to the program for each board are being left in place undisturbed.

It really is shameful that discussion of this kind should have to rely on Moderators deliberately disobeying their clueless masters.  The deliberate removal of all discussion about Contemporary Music is an act of cultural vandalism which destroys any fragment of credibility the cretinous Wright may have had remaining.

In interesting ploy would be to start threads praising programmes for which there isn't a message board.
