I've just been back to have a look and OH MY GOD !!!!

Virtually instant closure of any post that strays from the official sanctioned subject

Pitiful appeals to RC to try and do something about it

The mods have been turned into the thought police. Even as they stamp on a post they finish off with " we hope you continue to enjoy posting on this board"

Totally unbelieveable.

All the more reason to be eternally grateful that this place exists.

I think it is very believable, but only because I am beginning to regard some our colleagues postings are bordering on trollish.

The questions have been asked, the answers have been given. It was also suggested in a post from Chris-Host that the MB topic list would be reviewed.

We should desert the place for a month and see how it looks, see how many postings they get,see if the topics are reviewed.

A small concession has just appeared 'over there'.

An unnamed 'Host' has opened up a thread on the Music Matters board 'for the coming days' (hmmm) to allow discussion of the changes to the R3 Message Boards. Whether this is helpful or a typically cynical diversionary ploy by the running dogs of late capitalism I will leave to those who understand these things. But it is there to be made use of either, ahem, in a way that proves we do not deserve to be treated as children or....well, um, in a way that might confirm that. (Oh God, that's going to make me popular. Thank goodness for the 'Modify' facility.)

GG

Did you know your initials make you sound like a horse?  No! Stop being a child, Tommo!

Actually, I think I'm with you....  I had a few goes on the Breakfast board over there, studiously avoiding the trollesque goings on of the Music Matters Board.  Then they moved on to breakfast and I just decide to spend more time here.

Not really trolls, as nothing much posted is defamatory or offensive.  Indeed many of the posts have very good and just points about people making their voices heard.  It's just it was obvious ages ago that the mods wouldn't listen, so it should have stopped ages ago.  By continuing, it's just been carnage over there.  (And as a budding omega male afraid of all conflict, I left).

Nevertheless, the blatant flouting of rules has seemed to open a window, so there was some positive outcome.

Tommo, rules are but for the guidance of the wise. It is only fools who must obey them. Wink

Indeed Bryn, but 'not having to obey' does not necessarily mean 'disobeying'.

It is an individual's choice to go against the new rules on the other board.  I can see why people did it and that it may have had some door-opening impact.  But personally, I wish a different form of protest could have been found instead.

Ho Tommo.  What sort of form do you think a protest should have taken?    I think the problem "over there" is the almost total lack of response from the "powers" to genuine questions that have been put, fairly repeatedly, to them.  I say repeatedly, because serious posters have been unnecessarily ignored.  One of the posts from Host Chris was, I felt,  insulting.

I agree that some of the things said by the hosts over there have been patronising and insulting. However, many of the things said in response have been as bad if not worse. I think in this sort of situation it is a grave mistake to cede the moral high ground in that manner and to do so serves only to weaken the cause.

The best form of protest (aside from lodging a complaint through the BBC's official channels for such things, which I have done), would have been to carry on discussing other things, but tie them into the new boards - for example I restarted the disc before bedtime thread on the CD review board, more tenuously (yet justifiably since it was a recording) a discussion on Tuesday's performance on 3 - neither suffered any moderation. Indeed, the CD Review board, for the moment, has a remit so broad (all aspects of music recording), that there is nothing I can think of in R3's musical output that would be off topic.

regards, Tam

S'wave,

s'good question, and I don't really know the answer.  I only really know that I felt uncomfortable with us boarders "ceding the moral high ground" as Tam put it.  Sometimes I'm OK with fghting fire with fire, but not when it is quite so destructive - look at the impact it had on anyone who actually wanted to get on with a discussion in the way R3 had limited us to.......

I suppose I would have taken the following approach.  Rodge asked us to try the boards for a bit and then give comment.  OK, so we predicted the new approach would be rubbish, but it would do no one any harm to cool their message board addiction for a couple of weeks and try to make it work, if only to prove that it was too restrictive.  Then we would be very justified in giving him the full force of our ire.

Or we could act sensibly on the boards and complain through other channels - e-mail directly to R3, snail-mail-letters, and letters to magazines, newspapers.

And then if none of that worked, then we could trash the boards.

Or abandon them

Maybe that's all too dull and not passionate enough.  Sorry.  People know from my 40 character japes that I'm OK with having fun at the edges of the rules, and I don't actually mind breaking rules - but only if the impact is going to be good.  Sadly, I suspect RW has lost all patience with us boarders, and is ruing any thought of listening to his listeners via messageboards.

I am still hanging on over there, I have learnt so much about classical from those boards over the past two years.  I don't have much hope, but I'm not giving up, through loyalty, because of what they have given me through the years - no-one else could have done that.  I would be a poorer person without the knowledge and wisdom of those Posters

...what they have given me through the years....

Which 'they', Anna?  Haven't most of the 'they' moved over here?  Which very wonderful people are still over there, apart from yourself, c, LeTombeauDeCooperman?

But it's not radio 3 is it?

It's bells, whistles and flashing lights, and difficult to read with only one post a page (when graphics are included) and Lord Byron joining the No Brainers Society, sorry the [edit: silly party]. don't give it a good name.

You see, I really love classical music, it's not just a game to me.

Ho Anna!  There seem to be a lot more than one Message per page here.  Are you suggesting that people who post here do not appreciate Classical (?) Music and are not serious about it?
