We have a pc and myself and partner log as separate users.
From yesterday, whenever either of us log on, the screen on the monitor is shifted about an inch, to the right in my case, (so the right hand side of windows is off the screen) and the other half's to the left (so he can't see the Start Menu.)
This is Windows xp, and I know Andy will tell us what do we expect with rubbish like that. I will take his comments as read, but PLEASE PLEASE can anyone advise us how to get back to normal?
All suggestions gratefully received.
Thank you.

This might be too simple, but you know the thick blue strip at the top of the screen - have you tried putting your mouse on that and dragging the whole page into position, either to the left or right?
Failing that, left-click on "File" and go to "page set-up". You'll be able to set your margins and parameters on there.
I've got my "Start" menu at the foot of the page. Just click on start and drag into position.

Thanks, Milly, but that's not the problem. It is not the Mozilla screen that is out of postion. It is the wallpaper and everything on the screen. There is no blue bar to see, and the Start button is off the screen with the other user.
I've tried putting things in Help but nothing obvious comes up.

I hope I'm not quite that predictable Don B I use XP myself and I'm sticking with it, on this machine at least, certainly not going onto Vista for as long as I can avoid it. Can't think what your problem is though. As you're getting different shifts for different users, it can't be your monitor. Could be something to do with your video card settings, you should be able to find them via the Control Panel. But I'm only guessing.

Go to Control Panel and click on Appearance and Themes. See if any of those options work. Try clicking on Display.
Something I've just tried that worked was going to the very top of the page, right clicking and then on restore. That actually minimised my page, but from there you can reset it.

you've tried fiddling with the monitor (the horizontal/vertial positions/wifth height) directly?

And the gold star goes to...
inky.
I pressed the button marked "Auto select" at the bottom right of the monitor, and both screens are now OK.
It may sound pretty infantile to some of you IT buffs, but it is a relief to me.
My partner will be very pleased this evening and will be even more pleased to cook my the mussels he bought this morning. I am sure he would join me in giving a big Thank You to inky.

Great! What a relief. I knew it would be something simple but didn't know what on earth it could be. I've been playing about with my own screen here and had it all over the place but nothing seemed to fit with Don's particular problem. We all learn from other people's experiences and I didn't know that option myself. Thank you Incy.

It's easy to forget how annoying computer can be when you don't know your way around. It took me all of two years before I could sit down relaxedly at a linux computer and feel at home. (don't think I'll ever *really* get cosy with this mac :/ )
and: you're terribly welcome.

And I turn on the pc today, and the bookmark drop down menu is now empty. It existed yesterday. Any idea how to get it back?

As you write "bookmark" Don B are you using Firefox? - if so, there's 5 days' worth of backups available, if you know where to look. But if you're using IE then I've no idea whether there are any backups of Favorites (sic).

Encouraged by your good self, Andy, I have been using Firefox for the last year.
Where should I be looking?

Look in C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Application Data\ Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile name>.default\bookmarkbackups where <profile name> is a string of letters and numbers Application Data is a hidden folder so you have to unhide folders in Control Panel/Folder Options/View in order to see it. You should then see copies of your bookmarks for the last 5 days. Once you find one that is correct you need to copy & rename it to your <profile name>.default folder to replace bookmarks.html - make sure that Firefox is closed before you do this. There's a full write up which trj posted a link to when Mort had a similar problem - I think this is it http://kb.mozillazine.org/Lost_bookmarksIt's worth knowing where your bookmarks are stored since it's a very good idea to back them up yourself. I occasionally put my bookmarks online so I can access them from any computer. Also, as I have a laptop, it's useful to copy the bookmark file onto that so that I have access to them there as well - although, since it uses Ubuntu, the location is completely different.
