Don B, a patch is a correction to a program without installing the whole thing again. With Windows, Microsoft releases patches every month - the high-priority ones (at least) should be installed via Automatic Updates or Windows Update in the Start Menu. I've got Automatic Updates turned on to notify me, but not do the update until I decide to. Given a couple of recent cockups, I like to be in control of what updates are being applied.

As soon as MS patches something, hackers know about the problem and try to exploit it on unpatched machines. Many of the most widespread viruses eg Sasser spread like this.

One problem with AV programs now is that viruses produce many different versions of themselves very rapidly and the AV progs can't keep pace with them. So the old way of checking for viruses using signatures (ie code patterns) might have to be replaced.

I've just had my annual Reminder message from Norton telling me that I am about to be vulnerable to all manner of cyber nasties if I do't renew my subscription with them.

Having got rid of Norton because of the many problems it caused, I switched to McAfee. I scrapped it when my sub ran out and they wouldn't let me renew it but said I had to buy a new version of their program. I now use a free version of avast!

The pc installed a browzer called "Safari" when it was updating something recently.  I am using it at the moment, and it is going at a decent pace, for the first time with anything today.

It was almost certainly installed in an iTunes update, Don B. It happened to me too.

I hate that sort of thing. Apple aren't the only ones to do it but it's still very annoying. I ended up with something called Bonjour when I installed Safari. I soon got rid of Safari, as I didn't like it, but I had to get rid of all the other junk that came with it as well. I managed to avoid getting iTunes however.

Windows Firewall is turned off.  I am running Speed Disk on the laptop at the moment.  In 3 hours it has done about 15%.

Sancho tells me he gets non-online programmes to work quicker when the router is off.

Have you tried turning the router and modem off, waiting 30 seconds, then turning them on again, first the modem, then the router (assuming you've an external modem)? Alternatively have you a nerd you could invite round, bribe in some way, and get to nerd the whole system? Say, a neighbour's son who lives and breathes the stuff?

De temps en temps.  In fact I did it yesterday.  How do I turn off a router?

But that's not the problem really.  I get (Not responding) repeatedly.  I point to things, like Unread posts at the top here, and nothing happens.  I try to scroll down long web pages, and it gets stuck.  I type in Word, here or emails and the letters do not appear until after a delay, if at all.

It's not like this all the time, but it has been getting worse, I fear.

O and Speed disk has been going all afternoon.  I put the machine on standby while we went out to Holland Park, but it has only optimised 38%.  I'm going to leave the machine on all night.  Must get some supper and wine now.

How much RAM do you have, Don B? Sounds as if you might be somewhat lacking in the memory department....

18.1 GB out of 26.2 GB.  Should I get an extra hard drive?  I have deleted everything I can think of.

That's not the memory I mean, DB: if you click on "Start", then select "My Computer" from the new screen, and click on that, you should get another screen with "System Tasks" towards the top left. Click on "View system information", and a "System Properties" window will open. Towards the bottom right of that, there should be "xxx of RAM". What does it say?

Could be a VIRUS/MALWARE. If your running Windows check this ......

Start, Control Panel, Network and Internet Connections, Change Windows Firewall settings. This firewall should always be set to ON. (I believe that (all?) Antivirus software relies on the Windows Firewall running in the background)

There maybe/is/was some conflict between Semantic (Norton) and the latest Windows Update(s). If your on broadband (dial-up will take weeks)  I suggest you download this ....  http://free.avg.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition ... and this ... http://www.download.com/Microsoft-Windows-Defender/3000-12771_4-10353597.html.

I (would never) reccommend that you uninstall ALL your current Antivirus/Spyware stuff , install the above, reboot your computer, get all the latest updates and run Antivirus an Spyware checks.

Sorry, no, I don't.  I get icons for Acer C, Acer D, Documents, Printer.  Where should I look?  I've got XP.

I left Speed Disk running over night.  1 am it said "Optimising Moving data 38%".  It still says that this morning after being left on all night.  How do I get it to resume?

I looked up the help screen.  It did not give how to resume.  It did soon say it was not responding.  But that is fairly par for the course here.

M T Wessel.  Thank you.  However somebody else said here that Windows Firewall should be turned off, as I understood it, or there would be two firewalls.

Hang on, Ron.  Going to Control Panel, Systems I get 1.50GHz of 248 MB of RAM.

Is that what we want?

Yes, Don B, that's exactly what we want to know.

I'm guessing that this particular PC has been a fixture at Casa Basilio for some little while now. Wink It would appear to be quite a venerable machine judging by the specs you've given us: the amount of RAM is pretty limited by today's standards, and I've recently had experience of someone else's Acer which suggests that their own extra proprietary software, which runs on top of Windows, can cause extra problems. I'd certainly predict that the lack of RAM's not helping at all: though by the time you've added to that and bought an extra hard drive, you'd be well on the way to replacing the machine altogether, so far as cost is concerned. I understand that this is probably not a financially palatable suggestion, but, depending on what you want to do with your machine in the way of using other software (image manipulation programmes, etc.,) it's a PC that's rather lacking in the oomph that most programmes require nowadays, and no matter what you throw at it, you'd probably be better off starting with a new one from scratch. In these competitive days, it would almost certainly cost far less than the old one.

I hope I'm wrong, but that's how I read the situation. What do others think?

How do I turn off a router?

Switch it off at the plug, or pull out the electricity lead. Wait 30 secs. Reconnect.

I type in Word, here or emails and the letters do not appear until after a delay, if at all.

That suggests a memory hungry programme is hogging all your RAM, possibly one you don't need or want. You could check memory usage in Task Manager to see what's happening:

- right click the task bar (strip at bottom of screen)
- choose 'Task Manager'
- choose 'Processes'
- click 'Mem Usage' twice so the most memory hungry programmes show at the top
- tell us the 'Image Name' of the top three, and their memory usage, e.g. on the machine I'm using now:

Quote
firefox.exe 69,432K
RPS.exe 46,216K
svchost.exe 29,328K

That's OK - I know what they are, I want them there, and they're using the right amount of memory.
