PCM does not appear to be running.
Good. How about any programme starting with 'ati' or 'cli'? Look under 'Processes' in Task Manager. Click 'Image Name' for an alphabetical list.

Google asks me if I really meant Aspire 3610 lag?

Try various combinations, e.g. 'acer 3610 keyboard lag' 'aspire time lag' 'acer time lag'. I came up with this - someone on an Acer with the same problem as you plus a jerky mouse. D'you get that too?

RAM: 1GB modules of DDR2 RAM from http://www.7dayshop.com are £12.99 each. Assuming your machine uses DDR2 RAM (easy to check) and assuming you've got two slots (easy to check) you could sling out what you've got and for c. £30 run on 2GB. Regardless of whether this is a RAM problem you'd notice an immediate improvement. You really don't have enough RAM atm, as has been said, and it's so cheap it's daft not to cram machines with it. It also prolongs hard drive life because it churns a great deal less as processes occur in RAM rather than on the hard drive.

One more thing: there's probably an innocent explanation for your machine's behaviour but the word 'keylogger' did pop into my head when you mentioned keystroke time lag, e.g.

Quote
Spyware.ActiveKeylog records keystrokes by the user and may send this information through email.

Source

Until it's sorted out I'd be wary about using a credit card on the machine or typing out bank details or anything else a hostile source might be interested in. Better to be slightly paranoid than caught out.

I ran a cleanup programme yesterday, which I suppose wiped out cookies, etc.

No harm double checking. It might have missed your browsers. If you're running Firefox:

>> Tools
>> Clear Private Data
Tick ‘Cache’ and ‘Cookies’ only i.e. leave the other boxes unchecked
Click ‘Clear Private Data Now’

Close Firefox
Re-start Firefox

Any improvement?
