What I found was

Firefox 83,516
Outlook 8,032
Explorer 6,468
taskmgr 5,456
WINWORD 5,120

Winword is a bit worrying.  I downloaded it in the early days of my ownership, on advice, and then thought I got rid of it when Norton told me it was a nasty.

Any advice?

RON - I will have had this laptop three years come Christmas.  The pc is older but less trouble.

That looks OK. Firefox with four or five tabs open should use about 80,000K, so that's alright. WINWORD is microsoft word which I believe you said earlier you use. Plus it's only 5000K so shouldn't make much odds. Hmmm. It could be a start up file running in the background and sucking up your memory. Try this:

>> Start
>> Run
>> type: msconfig
>> Click 'Startup'

What's showing under the heading 'Startup Item'?

Phil - The top line says:

epm-dm c:\acer\epm\epm-dm....

I now get a little box saying "You must restart your computer for some of the changes made by System Configuration to take effect."

What's going on?

I'm running defrag at the same time.

Don't worry about that. Just press cancel.

It may not be memory at all. The typing lag suggests the CPU's bogged down. Go to Task Manager again, click 'Performance'. What's the % figure shown under 'CPU Usage'? It should be about 2%. If it's high, go to 'Processes' and click 'CPU' twice to bring the high users to the top. What are the top three image names?

The CPU percentage fluctuated in front of my very eyes.  11% maximum.

Top three

System Idle Process
LEXBCES.EXE
smss.exe

Blimey. Mine seems to hover at around 16-18% Sad.

Sorry, don't mean to jump the doctor's queue. Don B was here first and I'm happy to wait my turn, but is that bad? Top three thingies are:

ybrowser.exe  62,500 K
sychost.exe      8,400 K
BTHelpNotifier.exe  8,100 K

(Note to Ron, while George and I wait to see Dr Phil -

My Dell pc says 2.59GHz 256 MB of RAM.  It is a few years older.)

LOL neither are enormously high. If the CPU was straining and causing the typing lag it would be on 100%. Don: have you tried googling the name of your machine and 'typing lagg'? What are the nerds saying?

Pathetically obvious query number 25?  How do I find out exactly what my computer calls itself?  Control Panel, Systems again?

Should it be "lagg" with two g's?

Don't worry about it. Who wants to be a damn nerd?  Cheesy

Ahem. No.

Although you've not got much RAM (btw it's dirt cheap atm - c. £20 and you've got RAM coming out of your ears) it's not a RAM problem. A CPU usage of c. 10% means it's not a CPU problem. Have you cleared out all cookies, temporary files and the cache?

And today it's Word that playing up.  I create a document, save it, continue typing, try to save again, and now the name at the top of the page it has changed to ~WRL1629 and I have another irritating little box saying "Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error."

How do I buy £20's worth of extra RAM?

Yeah, there's something wrong there. It's probably incredibly simple - just a question of tracking it down and zapping it.

RAM: I bought 2GB for a desktop in April from http://www.7dayshop.com. They charged £37.93 inclu postage and it arrived in 3 days. Laptop RAM is cheaper I believe - I don't own one - and even easier to install. Did you clear out cookies etc and track down the name of the machine?

One possibilty: have you got PCMService.exe running in the background? People report keyboard lag problems associated with it. Is it there at startup?

System Model: Aspire 3610

I ran a cleanup programme yesterday, which I suppose wiped out cookies, etc.  (My computer, right click on ACER C, Properties, and cleanup or something.  I am running the defrag from there at the moment.)

PCM does not appear to be running.

Google asks me if I really meant Aspire 3610 lag?
