What do you feel in your bones about this one guys?

In my bones ? It'll be crap innit ? Since it is one of those "157 channels and nothing on" type evenings, I've just tuned to it ( having heard some of the pre-live test transmissions over the last few months ). A smiley voice lady is playing down the top 500 with no indication that she has a clue what she is playing. Pat Metheney - Louis Armstrong - Duke Ellington - Bille Holliday. There are serious questions as to what an ideal 24 hour jazz station should programme. Cecil Taylor on the breakfast show ? Maybe a little hard core ? But then if you surrender all the day time hours to not disturbing the horses, then you ghettoise the more challenging things to late night specialised programing. But that is probably the best fans can hope for. I haven't studied the listings but the pronouncements in Radio Times aren't hopeful. The station is going to play "Everything from the pillars of jazz like Stan Getz and Louis armstrong to contemporary artists like Diana Krall and Madeleine Peyroux". That's everything ?! As well as broadcasting giants like Kid Jensen during the week, weekend presenters will include Jamie Cullum ( for goodness sake ) another well known self publicist in Courtney Pine, and the more worthy but hardly cutting edge Digby Fairweather and Jacqui Dankworth.

Some pleasant Clifford Brown on now....bottom line is, if they can keep the too annoying ads and travel snippets away some of it may be worth dipping into occasionally as higher class muzak. God, I'm getting cynical.

these are the guys who made money out of classic fm, done their research and are not daft. it may be around a while; it clearly has to deliver audience to advertisers. personality and mix will be pretty saccharine if they are to keep numbers up, but as i wrote over there, enough salt & lemon will pull a harder core of jazzers. the 500 mix is pretty interesting, dross and treasure both abound, but that depends on taste dunnit?

would you upgrade your car radio to DAB to listen to it? this will happen in time, but all the jazzers i know drive old cars! reach may be more of a problem than they realise, they are on every channel but the current biggy, FM.

personally i've appreciated their soundtrack to easter; their schedule and ads will be summat else!

done well some of their promised progs could be unmissable; it could easily be my default tuning.

I think there must have been very few voters. A lot of it was crossover stuff but there were some lesser known hard core jazz tracks. Art Blakey's Mosaic was in the upper reaches somewhere. There are a good dozen Blakey tracks more popluar even among Blakey fans. I would expect the fringe jazz fan to be only familiar with Moanin' and Blues March, so the votes for Mosaic were probably all from the same family whose first exposure to modern jazz was that album/piece! Grin

PS If there are just three hours a week good listening (probably late night or weekend) from the new station it will be a bonus. It seems Mike Chadwick is doing a contemporary jazz show - contemporary in the "jazz of today" sense, not the adult/ easy listening/smooth sense, and there is another programme featuring "up-tempo  hard-driving" jazz , or some such, which may well be their description of hard bop that won't confuse the newbies!

I don't think I could do justice to serious or even serious/fun jazz listening 24/7. I expect the daytime shows will be in the CFM/R2 style. I doubt I will listen often at those times.

What's the betting that some good "thejazz" programme will clash with some Jazz on 3?

i should think that is a dead cert.
i listened all over easter as i cleared attic/spare room/cupboard under stair (boy does that feel good) and just got used to it, except for so much jamie cullum.
i am looking at the music system in my office - non DAB - and beginning to think of an upgrade...

So far so promising? The first ads have appeared (would that there were only ever that few). The prog director
(who hosts the jazz jury thing) clearly isnt a jazz buff but can host, and was wise enough to let the experts get on with it. The lack of studio guests or features makes the shows a bit less vital than they might be, but where there's Cullum there's also Ian Shaw and Claire Martin.

Has anyone found any recommendable specialist programmes tucked away in the schedules anywhere ?

The online players' down, Bobby, so I don't know how theyre shaping up since friday last. The review slot Sat 1-3 isnt bad-the guests are allowed to talk at some length and Digby fairweather extempore is putting a lot into it. he also does suns 3-5 which I havent heard yet. Jacqui dankworth precedes him then 1-3, and seems adept at storytelling from the little biyt6 I heard. Chadwick does 9-12 Fris pretty much as he did on Smooth but minus the nu-jazz, breakbeats etc-this does allow longish newbies, and the ads are still minimal. Courtney Pine's show was kind of phoned-in I thought. Generally the progs thus far lack theming and scripting and are still settling down, but most of it isnt dumbed down at all. Hope that helps.

I agree with Marblelugel's review and add that it is surprisingly acceptable as the default radio station in the house and at work; the only irritation is Cullum and the like, but this a a tolerable amount of noise compared to other stations. Courtney is crap on the radio, just listened to his r2 show - to escape the pipes on an otherwise excellent Late J - to find him earnestly discussing hiphop. plays some decent tracks too, but not a great talker or discussion leader.

Calum / Marble, thanks for the thoughts. Will try and sample some of those suggestions. Agree about CP's Radio 2 programme, tried last week's and found it too much of a dog's breakfast to bother persevering with. Even if there is anyone interesting trailed, you know they will only get seven minutes actual air time.

Is this the beginning of the end for DAB radio?

(Report from Radio Today)

Xfm stations outside London have been put up for sale by GCap Media today, as announced in Fru Hazlitt's new set of cost-cutting measures for the company. Also announced, as expected, the new chief executive is to close theJazz and Planet Rock and dispose of the Digital One multiplex.

Of course, these changes may never happen if Global Radio's second takeover attempt is successful, for which they have until March 5th to produce. Otherwise if the stations are not disposed of by March 31st 2008, GCap will hand back the licences to Ofcom. Discussions are currently taking place regarding their sale.

Fru Hazlitt also announced today that Capital 95.8 is to dump the 'no more than two ads in a row' policy, increasing inventory to meet demand from advertisers. "Capital 95.8 will have a new flexible inventory policy with up to nine minutes of advertising per hour and we plan to dispose of our interest in Digital One, reflecting our view that DAB is not an economically viable platform for the Company."

Fru has announced the changes in bid to deliver improvements to profits and operating margins. "GCap Media will become a leaner and more dynamic company focused on maximising the revenue and profit potential of five key brands on FM and broadband, the platforms that we believe consumers want and which offer the greatest growth opportunities."

Xfm London will stay with GCap Media whilst their shareholding in the Digital One multiplex will be sold to Arqiva for a nominal fee. The only GCap station left on the multiplex will be Classic FM.

These changes are a radical reversal from former GCap boss Ralph Bernard who saw digital radio as the future, and who was proud of GCap's developments on the medium and introducing unique brands such as theJazz. Just 18 months ago he announced to the city: "As digital radio sales reach the three million mark, I am pleased that not only has Planet Rock been voted Sony Digital Station of the Year but new presenters such as Rick Wakeman have helped the station achieve record reach and share. Planet Rock is a future star of UK radio and one to watch in the GCap portfolio."

Yes, I heard that news this morning and meant to post about it, John.

Apparently GCap are planning to 'replace' theJazz with a nightly jazz feature on Classic FM from 12-2am. Huh Roll Eyes

Somehow I knew something like this was in the wind-its a reflection of the non-musical values that constitute music radio these days. TheJazz's listening figures are up precisely because they have a format that is closer to a musical experience than the usual fare. None of theses number-crunching
numties`can see the relevance of nurturing a brand, and Classic FM with its extremely ropey beginnings would never have become the global franchise it now is with such idiotic views prevailing.

Sad news about GCAp and Digital 1. No more 'birdsong'!

No, seriously, reduction in choice is usually a bad thing, and I have dipped into theJazz from time to time and found it enjoyable (I don't profess to be a jazz aficionado).

I wonder if Channel 4 Radio will buy the Digital 1 mux? It will save them the cost of rebuilding Mux 2, which is what they originally planned.

This is really bad news. I had just started to get used to theJazz and was delighted it had, finally, gone stereo as I have two ears currently in use. I do hope it's continued in some form even on FM. It was bad enough losing Jazz FM when it actually played jazz, but now this! theJazz may not have been the best UK jazz radio station, but it certainly was the only one.
