Recalling Adams's purloining of Schönberg's Harmonielehre as a work title, it occurs to me that the title Chamber Symphony No. 2 (or rather its German language equivalent) was good enough for Schönberg himself. But then is Gordon's Yo Shakespeare any better than Adams' Son of... as a work title? And, in any case, why "Son" rather than "Daughter"? (perhaps Ian will wade in with some gender-based thoughts on this one). And did Adams ever think of writing a piece called Prequel to a Chamber Symphony? Perhaps he might eventually be commissioned to compose one entitled Chamber Symphony: The Movie; who knows? As long as he doesn't hit the titular nadir of all time and give us a work with the name The Chamber Symphony. Actually, if he did all of those, would their totality constitute an Adams family of pieces?... Best, Alistair |
