Recalling Adams's purloining of Schönberg's Harmonielehre as a work title, it occurs to me that the title Chamber Symphony No. 2 (or rather its German language equivalent) was good enough for Schönberg himself. But then is Gordon's Yo Shakespeare any better than Adams' Son of... as a work title? And, in any case, why "Son" rather than "Daughter"? (perhaps Ian will wade in with some gender-based thoughts on this one). And did Adams ever think of writing a piece called Prequel to a Chamber Symphony? Perhaps he might eventually be commissioned to compose one entitled Chamber Symphony: The Movie; who knows? As long as he doesn't hit the titular nadir of all time and give us a work with the name The Chamber Symphony. Actually, if he did all of those, would their totality constitute an Adams family of pieces?... Best, Alistair

Actually, if he did all of those, would their totality constitute an Adams family of pieces? No! It would still be missing an Allegro morticia and a Rondo alla Lurch.

Someone here might read that and then commission him to do those as well! Not to worry - as long as no one goes one step farther and gets him to add an adopted member of that family by writing A Child of our Time_Is_Now (still less The Mask of ditto...) Best, Alistair

I don't know about Rondo alla Lurch but perhaps a Lurch for Bassoon, Trombone and orchestra?

Dubbed “über-hip” by Entertainment Weekly, Alarm Will Sound is a 20-member new-music ensemble whose repertoire ranges from European to American works, from the arch-modernist to the pop- influenced gosh

Their repertoire isn't really my thing, typically, but the kids can play.)

from the arch-modernist to the pop-influenced Ah, they must be dudes whose interest in modern music exceeds the conventional academic brief.

Thank you for this thread so far. It's equal parts exuberance, nonchalance, and virtuosity.
