With quintessential metropolitan arrogance, I wondered if, when members from the sticks or abroad have plans to be in London, they might like to post to this thread, so that perhaps we can organise further meets around such dates, lay out the red carpets for them, etc.?

(of course just occasionally us in the smoke ought to venture to the wilder regions of this country as well)

I would love to come to London, Ian.

But at the moment I'm too poor to travel. Sad

I might come, one never knows. Now I have additional incentive to come. My friend loves to come to London. She is also pianist. We can meet with the friend and she can come alone for a meeting. I don't know when this plan could come to life or if it will. I will keep it in mind. Now I have students to play with and exams. I love to meet everybody.
May be pim will come one day too.

I used to come to London every single month for a few days.  I did so for years, but it hasn't been possible since my domestic circumstances have changed because I'm tied to school.  School holidays I'd have to bring a child with me so I'm snookered for a while till I work out how I can manage a trip with the least possible upset at home.

I'd love to join you all sometime though.  It looks great fun.

I'm definitely up for it and London makes sense. Perhaps this summer.

quintessential metropolitan arrogance
Being just a furriner who lives as an ex-pat in a little village called Bath (which is not yet known as London W111), may I make so bold as to ask whether the above is purchasable in Herrods, or may it be acquired only as a consequence of a successfully completed three-year course of study?

Best,

Does term end in June? Perhaps some date around then would be particularly good for all those involved somehow in educational institutions?

Terms, semesters? It hardly makes any odds these days! But this is a great idea. It won't happen if there isn't a bit of forward planning. Inevitably, London is the place, so Ian's idea that those further afield keep us all posted on their travel plans makes most sense - sometime during the summer? We can use this thread as a communal diary...  Smiley

I always think of terms/semesters as the time when students do next to no work, and outside-term/semester as the time when they do absolutely none at all? Or is your experience different?

(Would be quite an emotional occasion for me if a meeting effected the first real-life reacquaintance for 21 years between myself and Tony Watson, also - let's make it happen!)

Yes, Ian - except for right now, when 3rd years realise they have only x number of weeks left and plague one endlessly for time, having worked themselves stupid. Despite all the warnings issued about 6 weeks ago... sigh. It's not unknown for them to be sleeping on the campus floors in sleeping bags for the last days before their deadline.  Roll Eyes

It's mutual, Ian. We'll definitely make it happen. By the way, a little later in July is easier, say the second week? But a weekend will do before that, if necessary.

I'll be at Heathrow Airport on Tuesday morning this week for an hour - does that count? Smiley

But I might well be around in July too.

I used to visit London nearly every month while I was in employment, now I'm semi-retired with so much spare time I suppose I could visit anytime  Smiley

But with a round trip of 180 miles I will, however, visit London only when I can do two or three things while I'm there, combine seeing some of this group with visiting some of the wife's family or a shopping day for my wife Sad

Regarding people from the provinces visiting the capital, some advice may be useful on travelling, parking etc.

How to travel? My business trips involved visits to smart offices in Holborn which I think is within the congestion charge area. I dislike trains so I used to drive down the M1 (from Warwickshire) and exit at the end of the Jubillee line, Stanmore, park there for £2.50, and get the tube into the city.

That might seem a complex way to travel to London but I liked it as I could listen to music in the car for an hour or so each way and read a newspaper on the tube.
