A quotation from Mr Grew on the 'Religion' thread has implications here, too:

"And may we add that what people very often forget about belief, is that it is belief only. Because they believe, for whatever reason, that X is true, they act as though X is a known fact. But knowledge and belief are entirely different; they are worlds apart."

Does anybody else feel that a quality judgement must of its nature be analogous to belief rather than to knowledge itself?

Well, yes, I do. But I know someone who to some extent doesn't.

I would therefore like to see the following match-up please. On the subject of absolute quality in music - does it exist? In the red corner, Mr Ronald Dough. In the blue corner, Mr George Garnett. Wink

Just make sure you don't forget what happened in this thread, where we essayed something similar:

... and indeed failed miserably, for the severalth time. The very fact that so many contributors disagree with Member Grew on so many issues is surely cause for suspicion that if there are objective standards in music he himself has them wrong. But who cares.

Everybody knows that musical beauty resides not truly in the ear of anybody, but rather in their detailed and highly objective written critiques.

For some Freudian reason I read that initially as "... in their detailed and highly objective written cheques".

Nothing to do with Freud, I'm afreud; it's because you are a composer and, as all of us afflicted with that complaint know only too well, cheques (or rather the lack thereof) - whether or not "detailed" or "highly objective" - tend to be a not too infrequent subject of conversation...

Best,

Alistair

Are you OCD-ish about such things, incre?

(I don't blame you if so. I am myself, a little bit.)
