Hello,

I've just delivered our first MIXINGIT for Resonance FM. Robert & I were overwhelmed by listener support and decided to carry on. I'll let you know when our first show is to be broadcast. I'm posting to thank everyone for kind emails and messages of support. And also to ask for help. We have a vast backlog of Playlists dating back to 1995. We need a website. Is there anyone out there who could help us set up/design a simple website which would house these playlists, host potential podcasts and keep everyone up to date with news, music etc ?

Our email address : mixingit@mac.com

Many thanks,

Mark Russell

Very pleased you could carry on Mark. Thanks for giving us the "breaking news". Can't help with the web site but am pretty sure someone here will have a lead before long.

Mark - this is really good news - looking forward to the 1st Resonance Mixing It. Sorry I can't help with the website (being a technical ludite). I don't know how easy it is to get something up at MySpace? Anyway am sure that there is someone out there who can help.

Setting up a MySpace site is really simple and it will work just as well as a standard website. Myspace is not just for 15-year-old indie kids in bands, there are plenty of classical ensembles, composers and new music companies already on there - get networking!

Just one thing, if you want to put a music player on your myspace page make sure you register as a band, then you can upload mp3s etc.

Fantastic news!  Grin

There is a guy over on the LastFM Mixing It group who has been talking about setting up a Mixing It fan site:
http://www.last.fm/group/Mixing+It/forum/49584/_/235632

He seems to have the technical knowhow, but unfortunately looks like he has other commitments until April. May be worth contacting him though (I've pointed him at this thread too).

I can do basic HTML coding, but that is as far as my web skills extend!

It *should* be possible to set something up on, say, geocities.com. I have my own band's website there (http://www.geocities.com/roland_rock not updated for some time though) - if you don't mind the adverts you get free hosting (can't remember how much web space you get). I think Myspace would be too limited in terms of what you can actually put on your site - you just really get the one page, so you couldn't easily get all the years of playlists on there. Though you could maybe have a Myspace "front end" which then points the user off to the playlist database on another site.

NOTE: Geocities only allow limited 'download', i.e. if you have soundclips they will only allow a certain number of 'listens' per day.

I found last year that I could not store Quiz Soundclips at my geocities site because of that. After two or three folk had listened to the all the clips downloading was prevented. If there is NOT going to be a rush of listening then yes you can store soundclips at geocities. All my jazz clips associated with another site are OK on geeocities.

Oh yes - I'd forgotten that, sorry. It's a 15MB storage limit and 4Mb/hour download limit for the free hosting - quite low.
You can upgrade to Geocities Plus which gives no ads, 500Mb storage, 25Gb/month downloads. But that costs $5 per month (or 2Gb storage, 100Gb/mo transfer for abt $9).

Maybe someone has web server at work with some spare capacity??? (Could always have a "sponsored by xxx" message on the web page...)

Wow! Excellent news Mark. Thanks to you and Robert for finding an alternative way to deliver MIXINGIT to all your listeners.

Thanks also to the folk at Resonance FM for having the vision to host the new 'broadcast'. I'm sure Resonance FM will welcome the considerable influx of MI listeners ... Radio 3's 'awkward squad'.  Smiley

I look forward to tuning into your first broadcast streaming across the internet!

Now, if only I could redirect the Radio 3 slice of my TV Licence to Resonance FM ... oh, I see RFM are looking for donations? Might just do that in recognition of the station's support for the continuance of MI.

On the website front: I have some (very) limited knowledge re web stuff - however, it's probably not enough to fully meet your requirements.

Our first Mixing It will be broadcast in the next 7 days on Resonance FM and a series will start mid-late March on Resonance. Details:http://www.resonancefm.com/index1.htm

Great news and many thanks to Resonance. They're also desperately in need of funds - so anyone who wants donate you can do so on their website. No one is paid for making programmes, so the money goes directly towards keeping the station alive. It's vital that this window on experimental/non-corporate music is kept alive now that the BBC has largely abandoned it.

Many thanks,

Mr. Russell,

Is there no chance you can be on BBC Radio 2? I have already e-mailed the station controller and had a rant that she should have saved Mixing It and Brian Kay's Light Programme from Dick Bastard Wright's blood stained axe.

I would love to hear your show (and Brian Kay) on BBC Radio 2. But the good news is you're available elsewhere. I SHALL be listening!

Best wishes,

Scott Nelson. x

I can help with the site (HTML and CSS, but no MYSQL/PHP stuff), and can probably find some server space: do you have idea about the how much storage would be required, or bandwidth demands?

Scott,

I don't think we'll get much joy out of the BBC - as Mark said, they seem to have pretty much given up on experimental and fringe music. I have emailed umpteen people in the BBC (Rog Wright, DG, R2/6Music controller, Graham Dixon, Alan Yentob, etc) about Mixing It. Only Graham Dixon has replied. I also emailed Feedback and raised a complaint via the web site. It's all been stonewalled. My last email to Mr Wright (which admittedly was a bit of a rant!) elicited a response from Mr Dixon which acknowledged that I "have exchanged various emails with the BBC on this subject" but suggested I was getting nowhere and that they had told me all they were going to tell me (e.g. "The change of Mixing It was part of a wider refreshing of the Radio 3 schedule"). It was suggested that if I wanted to take this further, I should take it up with the Editorial Complaints Unit (I have the address, if anyone wants to do this...).

I think the BBC has decided to cut back on its support for new/experimental/leftfield/fringe (whatever you want to call it) music as part of a cost-cutting exercise and to tough it out until the complaints die away.

By the way - I heard on radio 4 this afternoon that Roger Wright will be going on Feedback on March 9th to answer listeners questions about the new schedules (and also the decimation of the messageboards presumably) - should be interesting!  Wink

The Resonance FM thing is great news - and hopefully as the "Mixing It Posse" join the Resonance FM audience, we will be making the odd donation to the station which can only help the RFM guys.

Dave.
