Going back to Lloyd George, I've just found this on my webpage.

Ffion Hague, the wife of former Conservative leader William Hague, has launched a book about the women in David Lloyd George's complicated private life at the Hay Festival.

Mrs Hague told the audience that Liberal statesman Lloyd George loved women but always put politics first.

She said his wife Margaret Owen had been a formidable woman in her own right "and one of the greatest prime minister's wives of modern times."

"She never put a foot wrong," she said.

Raising a huge sum for helping World War I troops, becoming a council leader and the first woman JP in Wales in 1928, Margaret remained "a Criccieth girl at heart".

Mrs Hague, who had access to family papers for her research, said Lloyd George had been a "colourful" and "capable" politician.

But apart from his achievements in war and peacetime as Liberal prime minister and chancellor, he had been a magnet to women right into his late 60s.

As well as his marriage of more than 50 years, The Pain and the Privilege - The Women in Lloyd George's Life deals with his relationships, including his long-term mistress Frances Stevenson, half his age.

With the cover of being his private secretary and with the unspoken collusion of the press, the relationship with Frances remained free of scandal. They were married briefly after Margaret's death.

Mrs Hague said there were many other lovers, and she had received letters from people brought up in orphanages who had been told they were related to him.

Lloyd George represented Caernarfon Boroughs for more than 50 years

Cardiff-born Mrs Hague said she had been drawn to the story by her own background as a Welsh-speaker, civil servant and working as a political private secretary to her future husband

What is this, Welsh bashing night?   Cheesy  Blimey, all I did was mention David Lloyd George and Nye Bevan  Huh  I think percentage wise there have been far more dire English political leaders, although without the Welsh Archers Henry V would have lost the Battle of Agincourt and we would all be French now.

Although roses are red and violets are blueish.  If it wasn't for Christmas we would all be Jewish.  Innit?  But as Milly said, being Welsh and Jewish are the same thing.  And God help you if you are both.  Don't go into politics whatever you do.   Cheesy

No need ahinton,  The Welsh are self mocking in the true belief that they are totally superior to all races.  Which is true.

Grin I wasn't Welsh-bashing - I couldn't really could I?  Not being half Welsh and all that.  I was just interested in the Lloyd George bit because I'd read all about him look you.

Of course the Welsh are a superior race in every respect!  Any fule no that.

I don't think Kinnock's failure to become PM had anything remotely to do with his being Welsh (or being bald).  It had everything to do with incoherent speech and thinking.

Kinnock could have been PM, his down fall was that toe-curling "Victory" speech the (night?) before the election.
