To me, there is a difference between religion, and belief.

The difference is the same as that between a habitual kiss, expected by one and delivered without thought by the other, and the spontaneous gesture of affection that conveys a meaning beyond words.

What ever happened to the "kissing as a prelude to sex" school of interpretation?

I am not answering that question; it is not entirely well posed.  What does it mean for a religion to *be* evil?

To answer that question, you have to look at who asked it in the first place. A poster who (it appears to me) has yet to display a depth of analytical or critical understanding in any field whatsoever, and who has by his own admission simply replaced a deity with a fiddle player as his object of veneration, and chosen a socio-ecological fundamentalist organisation rather than a spiritual one for his apostolic brotherhood of belief. A poster who might very well be said to display all the symptoms of religious zeal himself, though admittedly fixed upon unusual targets.

I'm not sure exactly what the best phrasing for the original question should have been, but I've been certain from the start that the original wording (or possibly the thought behind it; who can ever tell?) was both misguided and misleading.

Perhaps I should hasten to point out for those who came in late that RD is here referring to LB not TB.

It's official. OS is now PA and Ed to RD.

Thanks for that, Oz. We were just about to go out for a swim when I posted, and certain other householders were becoming impatient at my tardiness, which may explain the lack of clarity.

A swim? At 9.37 on a Sunday morning?

Whatever happened to religion? Wink Wink Wink

"My body is my temple.".... Mens sana and all that you know. Wink

Plus, at the risk of repeating myself from the other thread, it's what becomes of religious sects once they become organised which worries me. The 'Holier than thou' ethos prevalent in many churches suits my way of thinking far less well than a Blakean "For everything that lives is Holy".

In any case, surely you were at the 6.00, Ron?!

Appalling, those sluggards who can barely drag themselves off to the 10.30. Wink

Many churches (and people, and entities in general) utilize some schizophrenic mix of both.  Prejudices are hard to avoid; there's an important matter of how people cope when presented with evidence of their own prejudices.

I'm afraid there is no way I can call something which gave us Mass for Four Voices "evil".

Religion can certainly make nasty people nastier, by giving them a sense of self justification.  There are a whole load of awful things that have been justified by religion.  But equally a whole load of nasty things (the Holocaust, the gulags, loads of petty day to day spite and nastiness) have taken place with no reference to religious justification.

On the other hand religious traditions can make ordinary, muddled, confused and mediocre people a whole lot more loving and sensitive than they would otherwise be.  There is a sense that you are not the centre of the universe and the rest of the world should be respected.

IRF - I think you mean Byrd not Tallis.  The extraordinary thing about Bryd's Latin music is that it was written for use in illegal circumstances.  I'm still looking for the S J Gould you mentioned and hope to read it in due course.
