Richardson's policies and and arguments assumed an intelligent sophisticated electorate capable of understanding the issues involved, and ready to accept that some matters needed solutions that would be difficult, complex, and far from ideal.  He's up against a man like Huckabee,  who says that his "foreign policy is Chuck Norris"....

I believe Dodd and Biden have also thrown in the towel, although Fred Thompson is too obtuse to sense that he hasn't a hope.

I heard on 'Today' this morning comments from listeners complaining about the amount of coverage and an American journalist said that although there are 20 (think that's correct) BBc correspondents in the USA at the moment, thre were only two during the 1997 elections here, and one was told that she could only have coverage on a programme if she acquired a personal interview with Tony Blair!

We should certainly have as much coverage of what is going on in the EU.

True, but no EU Presidents are likely to bomb European countries - unlike the American President.

The Washington Post has a piece about the theme-music the candidates are using to drum-up support - and how, perhaps, they might have thought about twice about the implications in the songs they've chosen...  Wink

With the sheer quantity of money sloshing around we may may we not predict all kinds of calamitous prospects!

Pardon?

President Clinton bombed Serbia, a country at the heart of Europe - formerly a territory of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.  Civilian targets were included within the mission remit, and shrapnel munitions (which the USA claimed to have destroyed, and informed the UN it had done so) were used on civilian targets.

There can be few more repulsive pieces of newspeak than the phrase that was used to describe these bombing raids:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humanitarian_bombing

Surdulica Hospital, hit by American bombing. 20 people died in this incident.

Apartment building, adjacent to the Bus Station in Novi Pazar.
11 fatalities from American aerial bombardment (no details on wounded)

Milica Rakic, age 3, was killed when the shrapnel in the bomb dropped outside her
family's home (see the marks on the exterior wall) entered her bedroom window.

A brief overview of the 90+ invidual incident-reports can be found here, made by Human Rights Watch:

http://www.hrw.org/reports/2000/nato/Natbm200.htm#P88_14845

They conclude that between 488 and 527 civilians died as a result of the American bombardment.

I realise that, Reiner, but the key word there is NATO - which I think included about 10 EU partners at the time.

[...] I am not sure that US people are ready for black president [...], but everything is possible. [...]

It would indeed be a greater change - a bigger step - than usual were the country to become a negro republic. But there are precedents; we need think only of Haïti and Liberia. The difference is really one of scale rather than of anything much else. With the sheer quantity of money sloshing around we may may we not predict all kinds of calamitous prospects!

Calm down please, and delete the offensive content before someone gets the mods to do so.

I'm unconvinced by the "NATO" argument, though Sad  All the impetus for these attacks came from Clinton alone.  NATO, of course, agreed willingly - because it's a tool of US Foreign Policy.  The NATO Central Command had been waiting for 40 years for the day when it would be given a chance to do some fighting...   they'd been constituted to fight the commie foe, and with almost none of their foe left in the wild,  Serbia was the nearest thing they could find.

One could say it was NATO or any other organisation, but the facts remain unchanged - a US President decided to launch an all-out aerial assault on a European country.  He shopped around until he had an umbrella under which to act, and then the bombing was carried out by the USAF (assisted, I'm ashamed to say, by the RAF).

Where one cannot sweep the dirt under the "NATO" carpet is that the USA used illegal shrapnel bombs - they had signed UN Treaties declaring they no longer even possessed such weaponry.  But clearly, from pic 3 above, they had lied, AND they loaded it up with pleasure on their attacks.   It's also a matter of speculation whose decision it was to pick the civilian targets (of course, it's still denied the civilian targets were hit deliberately...   like the bomber pilot who circled a railway bridge three times so that he'd have the double glory of hitting a trainful of passengers in the centre of it, killing 40).

And what was achieved?  The Kosovo political powder-keg on which the fuse has now burnt to within 3-4 weeks of ignition Sad

The same yankee lies are now being told to justify the building of missile-silos in Poland - aimed at Russia.  Condoleeza Rice says they're built there to aim them "at Iran".  Which is odd, since the USA's invertebrate ally Turkey is right next door, but mysteriously hasn't been chosen as the site?

Meantime, John Madman McCain cleaned-up last night, and now seems certain to be the Republic front-runner:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-zoPgv_nYg

However, I'm sure it will come as welcome news to liberals everywhere that they stand to be nuked by either a Woman President, a Black President, or an OAP President...  what a triumph for Equal Opportunities Sad

I think my comment is taken out of context, though I am on shaky ground.
All I want to say is that Democrats will present a candidate who can not win. When we lived in the USA it was unthinkable that a woman could win presidential elections. May be situation has changed now.
If either a black candidate or a woman will be nominated by Democrat party they will not be able to win presidential race. Republican will be presented with a win on a silver platter.

Don't worry, t-p, it was Mr Grew's comment that was offensive, not yours.

Mr Grew does live in the past.

The word he used is historical and is not appropriate in this music forum (unless it is part of a music title, which can indeed be found) and his suggestion of the possible consequences of the US election are indeed racist.

Grew needs to grow up and remember what companay he is in here, and edit his message totally, now.
