In these times of financial turmoil and rising energy and other prices, suggestions are invited for a concert programme reflecting our reduced circumstances. The first piece will be:

Holst: A Frugal Concerto

Did you know that Opera Śconomica are taking out a tour of Britten's Albert Minnow?

Mr Buffeted, we are indeed all feeling the pinch these days, and many who have overstretched their resources in borrwing money for a roof over their heads might indeed feel that M Berlioz' Grande Messe des Mortgages describes their situation only too well.

Grin Grin  OK, I know when I'm beaten.

I was going to suggest Handel's The Parsimonious Blacksmith

The culmination of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition will be renamed, after its composer, The ‘Modest’ Gate of Kiev.

I see that the LSO under Malcolm Corporal will be essaying Mahler's Symphony.8 (The Symphony of a Hundred.)

And Opera Śconomica are considering Britten's Death in Ventnor for next year.

In the interests of a more responsible use of energy we would also suggest a new version of Carl Nielsen's Fourth Symphony, subtitled Turn the light off when you leave the room.

Similarly, John Adams's A Short Ride in a Fast Machine will be subjected to local speed limits (availability of fuel permitting).

Further to Mr No Dough's message, rising fuel prices now mean that A Short Ride in a Fast Machine will be replaced by Percy Grainger's A Walking Tune (wind powered)

... while admirers of Franz Schmidt will be treated to a performance of The Paperback with a bit of Sellotape around it.

At the opera house, we can expect an exciting season including:

Wolf-Ferrari - The kirby grips of the Madonna
Prokofiev - The love for a manky satsuma
Menotti - Two tin cans and a piece of string
Bartok - Duke Bluebeard's garden shed
Verdi - Foscari
Puccini - La Fancuilla del West Ham

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

The South Bank Centre*

Due to further commodity price rises our plans to replace Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Golden Cockerel with a performance of Mark-Anthony Turnage’s The Silver Tassie have had to be changed again and we will now be playing Maurice Jarre’s The Tin Drum.
