Words fail. The usual tactic of politicians to cope with ridicule, is dignified indifference, which risks looking pompous.
At least Governor Palin is not pompous, but at what a cost...
I notice all the debate is about personality and style, not policy.

You're quite right, Don B; and I suspect she has handed the presidency to the Democrats. I would agree with Peter G were it not for the fact that I'm not at all sure Ms P actually has anything serious to offer, so it might have been Hobson's choice rather than an error of judgement. I'm pretty sure the American people have more self-respect than to vote for someone so obviously flaky. I bet Mr McCain is wishing there was such a thing as a morganatic vice-presidency. I'm trying to remember if any of the famously dumb male politicians of recent years - Dubya, Dan Quayle etc - were quite this hopeless as I'd hate to think I was being sexist in my dismissal of SP. But they weren't quite in that league, were they? All I could think of while watching her performance was a BJ (Boris Johnson, of course)

Don B., Governor Palin has been questioned about policy and has clearly demonstrated that she knows nothing. What else should we focus on to make this small-town nobody seem interesting?

Who did in fact win election I believe. As did Ms Palin, Richard. I'm not sure Boris isn't the more sinister of the two because he evidently is neither stupid nor ignorant but apparently chooses to act the buffoon rather than the statesman. Sarah, as Don B observes, is, at least, not pompous; and neither does she display Boris's apparent disrespect for the people she represents. None of this makes me inclined to respect her as a politician, but as a person she probably has the edge on her London counterpart. Would the Tories seriously go to the country with the quondam HIGNFY host as their PM candidate? I think not, though little surprises me these days.

Don't get me wrong, Mary. My suggestion that she might be marginally preferable to Boris in the personability department wasn't meant as a compliment!

marginally preferable to Boris in the personability department High praise indeed! Would the Tories seriously go to the country with the quondam HIGNFY host as their PM candidate? I think they'll have to dig deeper than that if they want to lose the next election.

Max Mosley?
Weirdly, that was the first name that came into my head too.

Thought Max had come out of his little "problem" quite well. Interesting interview in The Guardian, seems a genuine sort of bloke -or am I just very naive?

And that is at the back of my mind also. Thank you Mary for settling that one.
