No, Kitty, can't say I do.  Tell us more.
It's been a while, but as I recall, G.F.H. (in the twentieth century) reviews a Tunbridge Wells Op. and Dram. Soc. performance of one of his with flashbacks to his life in period.

I think this was might have been the movie which included the memorable line (either about J.S.B. or W.A.M.) "his only real claim to fame is the ability to expel wind at both ends simultaneously" (or something along those lines Embarrassed)

I hope you're going to stage the ones we vote for, Don B! I'd like to see "Semele" again...

Reminds me - I got a couple of links to Ian Bostridge and Mark Padmore singing "Where'er you walk"

They were in an e-mail from Presto Classical but I don't suppose they'd mind my posting them here as long as you all promise to buy the CDs from them.

And the final outcome.

I have mentioned in various threads how I think Semele is a good thing, and nobody else has responded.  I am glad that the pollsters agreed with me: Semele by a clear majority.  (I am not sure how she would have fared under proportional representation.)

Thank you harpy for the links.

I know SEMELE only from a highlights CD (Gardiner). Any complete 'period' recommendation? The Gardiner, I think, is slightly cut. Does the DG under Nelson qualify as a 'period' recording?

I still believe that THEODORA is GFH's best oratorio.

Hi Parsifal!

Been very busy lately, but will just post that Opera Fuoco's 'Semele' is really good. I know very little Handel, but Semele is one of my favourites. I saw them perform highlights from this at last year's Lufthansa Baroque Festival - one of the best concerts I've been to. Paul Agnew is such a good Handel tenor and Danielle de Niese is my tip for 'the next big thing' - she has a beautiful voice and can really act. Super recording.

Hello, IGI! Thanks for the recommendation. Currently attempting to complete my Handel opera/oratorio collection with the lesser-known compositions and those I still don't know (I only have 30 works).

parsifal and others

Any opinions of the McGegan Susanna?  I got it on itunes and think it is delightful, though not without feeling (Susanna's If guiltless blood is very touching.)  Lorraine Hunt as the virtuous heroine.

No votes for staging, but Act 1 is almost completely static.

I have this SUSANNA (Hunt and Minter in superb form) and think of acquiring a second version!

For some reason, I just love Without the swain's assidous care.  Perhaps I am just a sucker for C18 poetic diction.  Also Daniel's It is not age's sullen face.  Lovely numbers, both.

What other recording are there?

The other SUSANNA is on MDG 33209452: the condcutor is Peter Neumann. (I have the MDG/Neumann THEODORA, a fine performance but slightly cut.)

Nelson Semele - I believe not on period instruments, but the harpsichord is banging away like crazy.  Kathleen Battle has a very appropriate throaty sex-kitten quality to her voice, which does not get in the way of the music, and she hasn't a hope up against Marilyn Horne's Juno.

Theodora - the Jews will not come for 'tis Christian, and the ladies will not come for 'tis virtuous.

Those ladies who didn't come missed the 'pagan' scenes, which are anything but 'virtuous'  Wink
