I have found it universally true that people who like opera are a lot nicer, and better to know, than non opera fans, do you also find this ?

You know, I misread the word "nicer" as "richer" first time...  Roll Eyes

It is a well known fact, by me anyway, that milly is rather lovely, in all ways.

Statistically, opera fans score lower on IQ tests than symphonic music lovers, (not that IQ tests measure anything other than the ability to do IQ tests).

I am, I am afraid, wearing rose tinted spectacles, as old school mate rachel, she off loveliness in all ways, and currently in LA due to air hostess jobby thing, is an opera fan, but, one must admit, the old 'do you like opera ?' question usually works, but some rather yummy people also like ballet or dance it.

Where on earth does that bit of information come from Bryn?  How could that possibly be measured?  How do ballet fans fare - do you know?  (I may have a vested interest in that statistic).  Wink

Oh it came up in one of those stupid "Test the nation" things. They did quote a research source, but I only absorbed the sound bite. I suppose it's a bit like the difference between radio listeners and television watchers. Wink

Since IQ tests don't, as far as I know, measure creativity, the most important thing, they don't mean much.

People who prefer chamber music to the big stuff usually seem to think they are more intelligent. Also, the more abstract the work, the more intelligent you are, apparently Grin.

A bit off topic, but I was recently shown a union bulletin from a Government department that is trying to put in place a "people plan" which will stress the need for staff to be enthusiastic.  The union's (unreferenced) response:

"There is a good deal of psychological research showing that those with depressive natures are in fact much more reliable on tests of inferential logic than those of sunnier dispositions."

 Huh

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

Is this thread for real?

A very charming claim, but ultimately indefensible. Still, I'd like to see someone who does like opera disagreeing with you; or people who don't like opera that agree with you.

I like and go to opera. And I disagree entirely with him.

(There, CD - isn't this like that moment in Annie Hall where Woody wheels on Marshall McLuhan to do something similar?)
