Yeh I just got an email to that effect from the ROH. Disappointing, I was looking forward to seeing him in the first cycle.
Nevertheless, I am still looking forward to it with 104% enthusiam (was 110%)!
Is a cycel a Welsh variant, I wonder? d;o)

Doesn't Terfel have a bit of a rep for this kind of thing? I can recall an ROH 'Hollander' that he pulled out of a while back, leaving Bernd Weikl to plug the gap (inadequately).
Having high standards is laudable, of course, but isn't the 'family reasons' excuse one he tends to drop rather a lot?
You could be utterly cynical and say that Terfel doesn't need to do a Ring Cycle for the toffee-nosed metropolitanites of the ROH, when he's the world's favourite boyo and he can do very nicely thank you turning out MOR albums that hit the charts. But I'd rather not be utterly cynical....
This is the way careers end, you know.

I agree with all of that, Chichivache. My main reservation is that 3 cycles might be rather heavy going for Tomlinson who seemed to find the Hagen at the Proms a mite effortful (although it was a vg performance just the same). I suppose that's another reason to be glad we're going to the first cycle

Scarpia's another role he pulled out of at the ROH some years ago (the old production).

Tomlinson seems to have gained a career extension due to Terfel's no shows. I seem to recall reading a few years back that he was putting Wotan to bed. And when I heard him sing Gurnemanz back in 2001, he was sounding rather dry of voice. Still a great presence, for sure, though.

There must be, presumably, a third Wotan there - Tomlinson will have had an understudy for his own cycle. If there wasn't before, then the ROH will be firming that up behind the scenes very promptly, I'm sure! Three cycles on the trot would be a push for anyone, considering the proximity of dates.
Sir John T is one of K Warner's most longterm collaborators (he sang the title role in Warner's first production at ENO, "MOSES") and as a veteran Wotan I'm sure he can be permitted a fairly light rehearsal schedule.

The Minotaur next spring: not something I imagine Terfel would contemplate undertaking. Oh, I dunno... chuck in Jose Cura as Theseus, Anna Netrebko as Ariadne, and if Androgeus were to be, say. errr, David Daniels... the frocks by Versace, and the video projections by Stephen Spielberg, and I imagine you might be able to get 10 mins on the phone to his agent Although apparently he only does Majotaur roles officially.

Having said that, Bryn did step in at very short notice to do the Dutchman at a WNO production which I was at last year - some understudy!

Where's the new generation of heroic bass-baritones in Britain, then? There ought to be some talented young hopeful snapping at Terfel's heels by now? Connell seems to have stopped singing - a pity, as he possessed an extraordinary talent. So who do we think the ROH is going to be holding in reserve now?

It wouldn't surprise me at all if they've put Donald McIntyre on standby, even though he's long retired and as old as Methuselah!
Either that, or someone obscure.
Anyone else remember Wolfgang Muller Lorenz subbing for Ben Heppner (in Tristan) back in 2002? Painful memories!

So who do we think the ROH is going to be holding in reserve now? After discovering his Wotan on this Ring cycle some of us have been sharing thoughts on, I'd be trying to secure the services of German bass-baritone Albert Dohmen, who has sung at Covent Garden before, as Scarpia. http://www.musicomh.com/interviews/albert-dohmen_0506.htm

Clearly the ROH has not heard of the saying 'once bitten, twice shy'. After all, I remember attending Walkure there a couple of years back when he dropped out of the same role at the last minute.
But, as has been suggested he has a bit of a rep for this sort of thing (though I had thought it had been better of recent years).
Without wishing any disrespect to Tomlinson, is he up to singing 3 cycles in this role? He seemed to be straining a bit as Hagen during the recent prom.

Connell seems to have stopped singing - a pity, as he possessed an extraordinary talent. So who do we think the ROH is going to be holding in reserve now? Reiner, if you're referring to John Connell, he died earlier this year - the obit was in Opera Magazine, a terible shock. He hadn't sung for some years due to ill health. Turning to the subject of this board, my first reaction on reading the ROH's email was YIPPEEEEE!!! But then I'm a Tomlinsonian and have for many years considered Terfel overrated.
