I'm at cycle 1 (i.e. starting 2nd October - to differentiate it from cycle 0!)

Anyone else going? Perhaps we could say hello at some stage.

previews.  Mixture of standing & sitting.  I've been working all weekend to get the time off.  Just arrived in London and popped into a cyber cafe on my way to drop off my stuff at my hosts' place.  I'll be getting online when I can if anyone's arranging a meet or if anyone wants the spare place we've got from Wednesday onward (see yesterday's message for details).

Must dash now - there's a horse called Opera Cape running in the 240.  I don't usually go in for coincidence bets but I can't miss that one!  I'll try to get online early evening; if not it will be mid-morning tomorrow.

Yes, Mr Harpy and I will be at cycle 1 - back of the gods, on the right unfortunately. Would love to say hello.

Well, I'm not going to reveal any details, but the Dragon/Toad scene in Rheingold yesterday had me in stitches!

Based on last night, you're all in for a treat from Sir JT. It's not the voice it once was, but the slight fragility suits his reading of the role to a tee - a little vulnerable, a little haunted. Quite superb.

Well put, Martle.  The only reservation I'd have is that I got the impression at times that he was running on sheer courage and determination.  I counted three syllables in the 'Fricka' after 'geh hin, knecht' at the end of Act II.  It sounded very dramatic but I had to wonder whether or not it was deliberate.  Let's hope he's not going to wear himself out in a role which, unless I'm mistaken, he wasn't planning to sing any more.

It's all very well for you (edit: Martle, that is) to say that - you're hearing him fresh.  I just hope he's got the stamina to last till Cycle 3 (which was originally THE cycle to have a ticket for, with Bryn, JT and Domingo...)  My tickets are for a rather decent seat which took me a year to save for, and I hope it will be worth it... Undecided

Thinking about it, I suppose Bryn was never a known quantity for Cycle 3 - in the original run of the individual operas, his voice fell to bits before the end of the run of both Rheingold AND Walkure (fortunately I'd been at earlier performances).

I am ecstatic to have the decision taken out of my hands and have the chance to hear JT's Wotan - it was a tough decision originally whether to book for Cycle 2 (JT) or 3 (Bryn) - but I am praying for his stamina.

In the article in the Telegraph this week, JT said "I’m approaching the end. My voice seems to go on and on, and my brain seems pretty good. But it’s the body. Ken Dodd says it’s like a maracas band when you fall out of bed. " Grin

HtoHe, Ruth - I think he'll last. He *looks* great, and this is shaping up to be a memorable dramatic performance. He's in good physical shape generally (mighty impressive for 61!), and he's an experienced enough pro to be able to pace himself I think. It's not that the voice has faltering last night, it's that it is naturally rather more fragile-sounding than it once was. Sustaining it through the Cycles is another matter.

Does anyone know who they've got to do the Hagens in the ones Kurt Rydl isn't singing (i.e. 1 and 2 I think)? The ROH website still says "an announcement will shortly be made" which seems to be cutting it a bit fine  Undecided

Tomlinson?  Cheesy

(I can't make it to any of them and am deeply envious.)

A friend of mine says he would give his eye teeth to hear it sung by Gidon Saks, who sang it for ENO, and I think I'd have to agree.  He was terrific - I can't listen to anybody else doing the Summoning without Saks's performance fresh in my mind.  He has sung the role in German elsewhere.

Even if the ROH agree with me and can get him at short notice (dream on!) I'm scheduled to get Rydl anyway.
