Oh well, someone has to be the first to make a comment about the content of the announcement, so I will dip my toe in the water...
... I can't decide whether I am more surprised by the subject-material or the choice of composer? It's certainly a radical step for such a notoriously staid institution? I am surprised that the copyright-owners have let this story go into the opera-house, where they seem destined to make a small fraction of what they might have made out of it on Broadway?
Although I applaud the idea of embracing this GENRE of story, it does seem a bit of a cynical cop-out to be making an opera out of a pre-existing movie... are there really so few worthwhile NEW librettos kicking-around the Dramaturg's office these days?
But it will certainly expand the repertoire a bit to have a tenor/baritone love duet
I'll bet anyone a beer they have a counter-tenor role in the piece?
