Um, yes, if you wanted to see La Traviata at Holland Park you should have done so about three months ago (it was quite good) Grin

I've never been to Opera Holland Park before, but the prospect of a Gioconda is very tempting.

I might be able to work the Gioconda date into my travel plans, with a bit of luck and wangling?  Smiley

But it's sooooo hard to erase the memory of the cartoon version of the Dance Of The Hours....  Wink

You know there are worse things it could make you think of! Grin

Public booking opens on 7th April 2008, and if the past few seasons are anything to go by, there are some very good value seats if you book early enough.  The pairs of seats on the end of each row have sold for £21 in recent seasons, and aren't noticeably worse than the top price seats which are a little way short of £50.

£21 seems so little to pay for GIOCONDA...  but I shall be expecting a blazing barque, floating on a real sea into which the tenor and soprano both jump...

The stagings there are often quite inventive about getting round the space and budget limitations. I suppose it's OK now to give away the fact that in their "Queen of Spades", Catherine the Great was played by a coat-hanger...

Ah, that Queen of Spades... yes indeed, Catherine the Great was played by a coat hanger, but at least it went down in history as the opera in which the last-minute indisposition of the tenor led to an unscheduled collaboration with the Mariinsky Wink

Just giving this thread a little bump to remind everybody that booking opens today at 10am Smiley

The cheap seats at the end of the rows - which were £21 last year and the year before - are apparently going for £10 this year!  So worth getting in early, given that you'll be sitting next to people who have paid £39 for theirs!

Casting information is at www.operahollandpark.com (click on "2008 Season" - I would suggest that all of the casts are really VERY good, especially La fille du regiment, in which the soprano is Hye Youn Lee (presumably the same person as Ha Young Lee, formerly of the ROH young artists' programme and winner of the audience prize at Cardiff in 2005(?)) and the tenor is Luciano Botelho, whose lightness of touch and easy top notes will be familiar to anybody who has been to hear Anna Bolena on the current English Touring Opera tour.

Gioconda title role is being sung by Gweneth-Ann Jeffers, which could be very very good indeed.  I am certain she'll be good at the hefty bits, but I'm less certain of her ability to float a pianissimo top B flat in Act 1, or do the twiddly coloratura before she does herself in. But we shall see...

It would seem that the soprano is still TBA for Trovatore...

If last year is anything to go by, it is better value to book by phone than online, as the online system adds a fee to each ticket whereas the telephone booking system just adds a fee to the transaction.

And which number did you use, Ruth?! The only time I've 'got through' was to hear an old telephone announcement of when booking opens. Oh, and 'ringback' cannot be used on this service. The website hasn't been updated yet either.  Angry

Edit: I'm in a queue now...

Yes, the 0845 number should have opened at 10am, but I was pressing redial over and over again for a good five minutes before it stopped telling me that the box office was closed and put me into the queue.

Once I got into the aforementioned queue I got through to an operator very quickly.  However I suspect I was very near the front of it.  Good luck!
