Knussen usually programmes the 1947 version of Le Sacre because it frightens the s*** out of orchestras who can almost play the 1913 version in their sleep: the orchestration is different and there's a fair amount of re-barring going on as well, to trap the unwary...

Any more detail on that, Ron ? I thought the revisions were minor + the point of the exercise was to extend his copyright.

Now I'm going to have to go delving, a/h. That info. was imparted in the outro to a radio broadcast in '04 or '05, which is backed up either on an MD or DVD, and which might be almost anywhere in the house or one of two storage units, though a quick rake through the shelves reveals that Mackerras CfP and Chailly Decca also use the 1947 edition, and the notes for the former state (regarding the Danse Sacrale) "...To provide contrast to the regular rhythm of the Ritual of the Ancestors, Stravinsky unleashes music so disruptive that, in 1944, he was obliged to rewrite the section (without altering its effect) so that orchestras might find it easier to read..." (Robert Dearling. 1988).

I don't have either score to hand, let alone both, so I can't comment in detail on the differences, neither does the contributor of the first review in the page below of the E-P s recording on DG, which also uses the 1947 edition, though he's obviously passionate about which version he prefers...

Now here's a real Pedant's Corner question: 'outro to' or 'outro from'?!

outro from would be the bit from the following presenter - e.g.:

outro to: "...I'll hand you back to Broadcasting House for the rest of this evening's listening"

outro from: "Olga da Polga there live at the Royal Albert Hall..."

or some such.  Huh

I'm outraged you'd make such a suggestion, Bryn!

You outer-metropolitans may worry about such things, Bryn, but here we care not a jot: it's a word that helps me label files easily when I'm editing broadcasts. So far I've spared you from my neologism 'midro', which obviously applies to any extraneous blether occurring in medias res.

Ron, I'm quite outré enough to similarly label the applause and/or post-performance announcements. However, I don't think even I could sink to "midro". I tend to use "blurb" or "chat" in such situations.

Re the various versions and editions of Le Sacre, here's a can of worms, although it does confirm the alterations to the Danse Sacrale made in the 40s were more than superficial: ''...changes in orchestration, barring and pitch...."

Wouldn't a true pedant use intro-, extra- and infraduction or some such? Wink

That's no "can of worms". It's more like a barrel of 'em.

I'll be there!

Hi Tommo (or anyone else going this evening) -

Any idea what time it would be advisable to get into the Arena queue for this one?

I'm going to try to be there from 2.30 or 3.00.

I hope that will be early enough.

I've not queued for a single Prom this year, blue. I just turn up 10 mins before the concert start time, when the queue's already been let in, and I walk straight in. There's always plenty of room still to push forward to the middle of the Arena, at least at the concerts I've been to.
