I heard bits of it but was rushing about. It sounded great. There are technical problems on the 'play again' feature which can be raised here. I've just complained but my post's in moderation as I've not contributed to the nerd boards before so they must check I'm not OBL.  Roll Eyes

I've replied to you on the other board but for anyone else who gets silence when they try to LA to audio, click on Text Only button on the iplayer home page (top left) and then you can bypass iplayer and launch the programme in Real Player.  Just got it on now and it's playing without any problems at all.

Poor Bryn has slipped into the role of Fozzy Bear, and is taking a large amount of the flack Sad

Don't worry about me, R_T. One of the benefits of having no musical reputation to defend is that I can, and will, take on anybody. Ask autoharp, who I think remembers a certain encounter at the RFH, back in year dot. Wink

You make a happy man feel very old, Bryn. I have no memory of this whatsoever, unless of course it happened in the Purcell Room . . .

Thanks! I'm listening now. My cat, who like all cats is a Conservative, has just left the room in disgust.

My memory says some sort of conference facility at the RFH. I also seem to recall it may, on that occasion, have been Wilfred Mellors who was the target. I further seem to recall you reminding me of the event, only a couple of years ago. Wink

Thanks for this - it works a treat.  I can now settle down and listen once more to Roger Norrington bringing about the End of Civilisation As We Know It.

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

Well, I caught almost all of it on Ao3, and speaking as someone generally and seemingly chronically mistrustful of Elgar, I found it a scales-falling-from-eyes performance. Can't say that about any other one I've ever heard (and I've really tried, I have). The peroation at the end of the symphony, which always sounded to me as if it should work but never did, did. And magnificently.

That peroration had tears welling up in my eyes, martle, and that's not something I commonly associate with Elgar. I was less taken with the performance of the Haydn, but still found it very enjoyable, intonation problems (especially in the first movement) notwithstanding. For me, the 'cello just did not 'dance' enough. I have the Hänssler recording of the Elgar (same forces) but thought the Prom performance the finer of the two.

I am not an Elgar fan, it never engages me, but call me a Philistine - I really enjoyed the Elgar, will definitely listen again tomorrow.

It's not just the performance either, Anty. I reckon the 1st Symphony to be just about the best thing Elgar wrote.

(We can now both have stones catapulted at us).

Well, back in the Elgar thread, a certain someone did suggest to member Barrett (who had commented on having caught a fleeting moment on the radio) that both symphonies might be worth his perusal - or at least the scherzo from 2 for starters. No stones from this quarter, then.

I am happy to report that the iPlayer version of the Elgar (plus most of the prefatory edited interview), is now fixed:

Did I mention that Total Recorder is a fine software tool? Wink

Oh great! The Elgar is fixed, but now it's the Late Proms from that night which is in silent running mode:

But Anty, you get lower audio quality with the Real Player version. Why make do with that when they keep claiming that the iPlayer version will be available for seven days after the broadcast. It's about time the presenters were permitted to say "for the next seven days, with a bit of luck, if BBCi can get its act together".
