Just a point on the piccies on the current homepage. They were put there for two reasons
1. to add a bit of colour
2. to provide clickable links to the boards (to save having to slide the cursor to the far left of page)
Few members seem to use the front page, but newbies will see it and may appreciate the image-links.

John

John, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to criticise  I never knew the pictures were clickable until now!! I always use the front page btw then go to latest posts.  I never use 'see latest replies to your posts' because it brings up pages I may have posted on months ago but which I am no longer interested in.

One point.  On another SMF MB I go to, when I have a PM it appears in my Outlook Express.  Is it possible to do this here?

Yes, Anty. If you go to your profile, then click on the 'Personal Message Options' link, you can get PM alerts emailed to you, which also include the messages.

John, as to the photos on the front page, I have no great objection to the images chosen, but could they be resized so it doesn't take so long to scroll down to the bottom of the page? Also, when M&S set up, they have the ten most recent posts listed rather than the five we use here; it might be useful to have this as, when posts come thick and fast, it is possible to miss them.

Thanks Anna, as I say I don't think members use the homepage much, it might be a bookmark but most, and I am one,  seem to go for the Unread Posts link

IGI, do you mean make then narrower so the page is not so long?

If I/we can find some thin images, yeah sure  Smiley

Several people comment on scrolling down taking time, like does it take 5 seconds or whatever? I immediately think 'mouse with wheel', or use 'End' button on keyboard  Huh

I remember seeing that and having the same thought, and I looked through all the admin screens and couldn't find where the number of listed messages could be changed.

Is pw the admin at M&S??

pw, is a list of 10 messages the default on your site?

Our Mods? Any of you found if we can change this?

The trouble I have is not that it takes a long time to scroll down in itself, but that once the bottom has been reached, there are so many images that have to load that the resulting increase in page size means you're carried quite a way back up the page and have to scroll down a second time.

Nope all boxes ticked, nary a message, but I get them from the S&M MB.

I don't have either of the boxes ticked on that page, but I do have the

Is it worth comparing your settings on the M&S page to your profile here?

I must admit, John, I use the mouse wheel and it takes five or six scrolls to get there (and then some more once the pictures have loaded). I've never really used the 'End' key before, but shall now!!  Cheesy

As to the pictures, is it not just a case of either resizing them (which would also make it quicker for the front page to load) or cropping them?

On the general point about number of people visiting and posting here I'm rather with Sid, the more the merrier. I'd be sad if I thought the place was becoming a Closed Order and I certainly hope recent newcomers don't get that impression. People come and people go and sometimes come back again and I'm all for it. Long may it continue, sez I. (I don't of course know what goes on behind the closed oak door of the Mods Staff Room but extra numbers as such wouldn't cause our distinguished Moderators much extra work would they? Only if they broke the rules?)

I don't have any particular views about format. But I would be prepared to pay large sums of money to have the spelling of 'sponsered' put right. Even the top moguls of MyForum365 must have their price, surely?

Just above that, George, in bold black letters, is a section headed Recent Posts, followed by the five latest ones, in reverse order. If there were ten instead of five, it wouldn't be so easy to miss replies to your posts.

I think I'm with you and Syd here. We all 'know' each other (online, at least) very well and there is a danger that, to the outside world, we are perceived as a bit 'cliquey', although we're not really. I know that members are very good at welcoming newbies, many of whom do stay and post and I find it refreshing to see new names amongst the familiar friends. I wonder how large our membership is, anyway? Sure, there are 300+ registered members, but there are many who have not visited for a long time. I know some enjoy just reading our posts from the sidelines, and there's nothing wrong with that (I did so at the old R3 MBs for some time before joining) but would estimate that our active membership is little more than 70.

I thought spatny's mock-up quite attractive and thanks to him for preparing something for us to view. If it were possible to move all the posts, images etc from this site to that one, then I'd welcome it, to avoid the adverts, the 'sponsered' etc, and if it suffered fewer 'slow' times, then all the better. But if not, what we have here is pretty darn good!  Smiley

IGI, Anna,

Scrolling... ah I see you are referring here to the LOADING of the page, and yes the size/source of the images will add time to the loading. I expect smaller and/or lower quality images will speed up loading.

Time to change those image-links then.

When I click on something called 'View the most recent posts' at the bottom of the Home Page I get ten pages-worth of the things. There's another button somewhere that I've missed?

George, (IGI has already replied, this is what I was just writing anyway)
The 'View...' link allows you to read recent messages. IGI was referring to that little list at the bottom where you can see a list where the last 5 messages were posted. On M&S the list is 10.

On the general point about number of people visiting and posting here I'm rather with Sid, the more the merrier. I'd be sad if I thought the place was becoming a Closed Order and I certainly hope recent newcomers don't get that impression.

Oh, of course we all welcome new visitors, just look at our often scary welcome threads, and they come in one or two a week, presumably after having read a few threads. We've likely had 100s of guests who decided not to stay. I think Spatny wants to capture many many more of those passing guests.

The question is how many more do members want here; another 100 or 200 I suppose wouldn't make the place too busy, but another 1000 or 2000 would. That's just my thought and what I'm reading in other postings on this thread.

I expect if we had 2000 members there would more for our Mods to do.....

The 365 owner/admin did visit here once, I'm sure we asked the question but if he's American he maybe didn't see the problem (Is it American spelling??)

Oh, yes, um, embarrassed cough, that bit. Cheesy  Ooh look, a hen harrier.

As this has probably revealed, I tend to whizz past that and click the 'View most recent posts' when logging on and then scan through (in reverse order which makes everything look like the 'Off-topic replies thread') and read whatever takes my fancy. As elsewhere, we obviously all have our own methods of negotiating a passage through this complex world.

Love the new 'postage stamp', IGI (he said in a non-cliquey way).

Just bad spelling then Rich, thanks.

OK, how many regular members do we have?

I've looked at an admin screen list which says when each member last online = visited (logged in?) the forum, and approx.

120 members have visited in the last 2 weeks

150 in the last 4 weeks

180 in the last 12 weeks

So we have over 100 very regular members visiting (the list doesn't say that they posted during the time)

I've knocked out a few piccies 143 x 54 below If anyone wants to show/offer more images of that size on this thread we could replace all those currently on the homepage

or we can just dump the image-links (but it's a bit of a pain on my laptop navigating without them  Undecided )
