I forgot to introduce myself to you all. Undecided

I will now use my second posting to this board to introduce myself. Wink

My name is Pim, I'm 28 years old and I live in the small town of Maassluis in the Netherlands. I joined the Radio 3 MB a few months ago because I wanted to add some comments to the CD Masters MB. Later on, I also joined other boards of Radio 3 and Radio 4. I'm very disappointed about recent "developments" on Radio 3 and the Radio 3 MB. I don't think that in the future, I will post many messages on that board.

I sincerely hope that this new board will keep the spirit of the old one alive and also will add something new.

Best wishes,

Pim

Hello Pim and welcome!

Like you I live on the mainland. (In Köln. Or Keulen, if you prefer.) I don't listen to R3 'directly' but always enjoyed the company of the people on the message board. This was fine when the boards were set up to allow it. But since the boards have been remodelled to focus much more closely on the programmes I don't think I'll be over on the Other Side much either.

Welcome Pim,

Hope the variety of Topics offered here gives you somewhere where you can talk about your favourite music. I think there might be a re-arrangement of Topics once we've settled down so if you have any suggestions have a look for that discussion, I think it's in the Welcome section.

Hello Oliver! Thank you for your kind remarks. Smiley

I'm able to listen to Radio 3 on cable, but I wonder how long I will have this pleasure in the future. One of the reasons why I got rid of my television was the fact that my cable company removed WDR television from the cable. Instead of that channel, we got a Spanish one with bloody bullfights on Fridays. The mind boggles. Roll Eyes

It's also possible for me to listen to WDR 3 (radio) on cable in Maassluis. It's no longer the great station that it once was, but I love the wonderful documentaries and special features it's still bringing and I love to listen to it on Sunday mornings when the doors of the magical musical archives of the WDR Symphony Orchestra are opened. As you are living in Cologne, I suppose that you also listen to WDR? I try to follow other German stations as much as possible on the internet, but I have a very busy life so unfortunately, I miss a lot. Sad

Thank you also, John. I will look for the suggestions discussion and then I'll see if I can add something useful.  Smiley

Silly thing is, I can hardly listen to WDR3 here at home (in the middle of Köln!) - the signal is too weak for my radio. So I would need cable too...  Roll Eyes

And you would probably not hear my ensemble on the radio either. We do a series of 4-5 concerts a year at the WDR and the station records them. But the head of new music at the station doesn't like us so they never get broadcast.  Angry

Hmmm... Strange station this WDR 3 actually is. I was born and raised in the small town of Gennep, that's near the German border. I was always able to receive the WDR 3 signal over there. Later, I lived in Maastricht for a while. This city is located closer to Cologne than Gennep, but it was almost impossible to receive WDR 3 in Maastricht! I have to tell you that it's possible to listen to WDR 3 online. The only problem is that the signal stops after 30 minutes. You get a warning like "WDR 3 is financed through taxpayers money - Please remember this!", but you can re-load the signal immediately.

So it's the new head of music that's keeping interesting music of WDR 3? Angry Bad news, but still I'm happy to know. In the past, I used to listen to WDR 3 a lot for new music. Forum Neue Musik was an excellent programme, but it has been deleted. The evening concerts on WDR 3 are not very interesting anymore. Too bad. Embarrassed

What's the name of your ensemble, Oliver? Please tell me: I'm very interested! Smiley

musikFabrik! Cool

An excellent ensemble! Hope to hear it here in the Netherlands in the future.

One of my favourite CD's of musikFabrik is the one with vocal works by Stravinsky, conducted by Daniel Reuss, a very funny man. Like me, he hasn't got a television and I remember a hilarious interview on Dutch radio in which he made fun of a horrible Dutch soap opera "actress".

I also remember a musikFabrik disc with works of Harrison Birtwistle but that came out ten year ago, I think. In those days, I listened to CD's from the library, I couldn't afford it to buy those disc by myself.

Still I see some upcoming WDR events in the near future on the website and I must add that the Stravinsky disc was actually featured on WDR 3 last August:

I suppose that means we haven't lost the war yet. Wink

I do sometimes, t-p. But it's really not the same thing. I used to do it from time to time but I can't feel the same sense of connection that I get listening to the radio.

Pim, we keep playing the WDR concerts - people higher up than the head of new music there gave us the series and it's been very successful. Of course that makes the head of new music like us even less. Some day we have to sort it out! But until then we just keep doing the concerts (115 last year all over Germany and tours as far as Japan and South America) and making the CDs.  Cool

Oops again: I didn't saw that you already posted a reply. I was editing my earlier message (about the musikFabrik disc featured in HörZeichen). Undecided

Interesting facts about that head of new music. I wonder who it is (if you don't want to tell me, that's fine with me Wink ).

In the last years, my attention in music was driving more and more into the direction of older recordings of the mainstream repertoire, but recently I'm beginning to get more interested in new music again. When I first got interested in classical music, I had a great love for new music. I think no one of my age in the Netherlands has heard so many first performances of pieces in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and in Rotterdam like me. I have to admit that I don't know all the composers I see on the website, so I think it's time for me to get more involved in new music again! Smiley

If you were to type redaktion neue musik wdr into google I suspect you'd see his name pop up...

(his name's Harry Vogt anyway)
It's hard for us to play much in the Netherlands - the funding system works a little differently there which means the concert presenters don't have so much of their own money to play with. More of the money goes to the Dutch ensembles, who can afford to play more cheaply in Dutch venues, which makes the fees too small to bring foreign ensembles in...

We have a lot of ensembles for new music in the Netherlands. The policy of the last thirty years has been very strong in favour of ensembles and against symphony orchestras. It seems that in this country, it isn't possible to support both factions.
