We start a new week with a new member, Descombes. Welcome.
Perhaps you'd like to start the ball rolling by telling us a bit about yourself (or at least your interests).

Welcome Descombes, and please don't worry about infantile behaviours on this welcoming thread, though it is an initiation test, how you respond to such foolishness Clearly you are a philosopher of cognitivism.

Many thanks for all the words of welcome.
I found this Forum when exploring the messages and links elsewhere on the subject of the BBC Young Musician. Seeing my sense of outrage echoed here made me feel at home, so I decided to join you! I think it was via a link about Tommy Pearson's views that I stumbled across you. To be honest, I don't think it had registered with me that TP was no longer on R3 (and probably won't be in the near future, having read his forthright, but well-deserved, comments.) He seemed to be an ideal in the demystifying of the presentation of R3, before the trend got completely out of proportion and reached the ludicrous stage it's at now.
Having been asked for a brief description of myself, I should say that I am a long-term R3 listener (since the time it proved so helpful in filling in so much background knowledge for my Music A level some time back in the last century.) My main interest these days is the piano, but I hope I also have an all-round interest in all types of music. Thompson1780 might not have caught the reference in my chosen name to the pianist Emile Descombes, a pupil of Chopin.
I'm still finding my way around this interesting feast of informed and stimulating opinions. I hope I will be able to express some thoughts which might be of interest in the future.
Many thanks, again, for the welcome.

Big welcome, again, Descombes. I had thought you were a fan of philopsopher Vincent D. and it is a great relief to know you won't be writing essays here about Hegel, Husserl, Heidegger, Schelling, Kierkegaard, Schopenhauer, Marx, Nietzsche and Freud

I'd just like to thank everyone for their welcome to the group, especially Ron Dough and martle, who helped me with some technical matters when I first joined, and Stanley Stewart, whose has kindly posted a DVD on Vaughan Williams to me.
It's not only a very hospitable group, but also very comprehensive in its content. I have already found that exploring the various opinions can be fascinating, but also very time-consuming!
My next (rather ambitious) aim is to explore the possibilities of acquiring an avator. It looks rather daunting, but I have followed through the lengthy discussions under the Announcements section. Could I ask two questions: 1) Is it best to attempt this via the photobucket albums? If so, could someone confirm the passwords? The ones I tried did not seem to be recognised. 2) Did I read somewhere that this is the preferred way to post an avatar and that taking something direct from one's computer, independently of p/bucket, has the potential to cause technical problems?
Sorry to ask what must be very basic questions! Everyone here seems to be so technologically competent!

What you want, descombes, is this... http://r3ok.myforum365.com/index.php?topic=79.0You can ignore frivolous gossip started by me towards the end of the thread. I leave Uncle Ron or others to give you the latest on photobucket: I haven't used it for some time. There has been a more recent photobucket account since Michael set up the original account, with characteristic generosity. I changed my Eeyore avatar to Juan Diego Florez back in the spring, and was kindly told that Eeyore was more appropriate. I changed it back. I must change my motto, as well, as it is no longer seasonal. I have been posting images via Flickr, until yesterday they told me to cough up if I wanted to add more images to their account. But for avatars, yes, you need photobucket. Some here are frighteningly technical, but most of us muddle through.

Thanks for the help, Don B. I had been using the passwords here: http://r3ok.myforum365.com/index.php?topic=79.30which are slightly different. No wonder I was "not recognised". I have various avatars in mind: it's good to know that they can be changed, since I am not really sure which to use at present. This is a task for later this evening, when I feel calm and refreshed!

O dear, the thread you are looking at is the one I linked you to. I don't think it will tell you much about photbucket, though loads about the personalities involved (I am always concerend that we will appear off-puttingly cliquely to newcomers, but you found some here with common interests almost at once, which is nice.)
If you find the current password (I saw it recently) do let me know. Try Search.

And welcome from me too Descombes, I am sure you will like it here.
I set up my own photobucket account (dead easy) because I am so useless at remembering all those different passwords I now use just the same login and password for more or less everything that isn't sensitive (i.e. banking)

Idiot in distress!!!
I suppose some progress is better than none at all. I've got a photo onto Photobucket and converted it to avatar size. Next problem is getting it onto my profile. I've added details on the "I have my own pic" section, and ticked that box, but nothing seems to happen.
Any suggestions?

Descombes, "I will upload my own photo", then past the link to your photo which you have right clicked on and copied from photobucket
