Just to let legitimate members know that we're undergoing something of an onslaught of spammers right now, many of whom are intent on posting pornographic links. We're trying to zap them as quickly as possible, but if things really get out of hand, there is a possibility we might even have to suspend the board temporarily.

We're aware that we normally welcome new members immediately, but on the present showing, we'd like to request that no greetings are posted until each new member has completed registration and posted an acceptable message, otherwise we'll be awash with welcomes to spammers who were zapped immediately.

I did wonder why we had 16 new members today, looking at the stats page.

Can I just say I haven't experienced anything of spam or naughty posts today, so would like to offer a big hand to Ron, Mort and Ollie.  A sterling job in the face of adversity.  If you ever want to temporarily suspend things so you can get a breather, that's fine with me.

I saw one strange post. I am so scared. I never saw anything like that in my life.

I would like to second this...the entire role is an often thankless and obviously at times unpleasant task, which appears to be undertaken with good humour and excellent judgement.

Thirded. And can we perhaps cool our jets on other posts in order to give the Mods some space to keep this site functional? Perhaps it's worth pointing out, again, that all three of them have lives/jobs/many other commitments. They are also (last time I peeked) human. They are not paid a penny for the duties here to which we elected them.

Today there has been spam, contentious posts, complaints and much else. Let's at least be patient with the Mods, yes?  Smiley

Thanks for that. In just the last 5 minutes we've had to zap some more, including a very graphic image with a link to a porn site, on the Welcome thread.

They seem to be flying in thick and fast (though possibly one or two are genuine newcomers). It's a relief to know that the mod team are actively swatting them down - thanks, mods - but I'd understand entirely if you felt the need to close the forum down overnight.

Just want to add my own appreciation to Tommo's above - I've not seen any spam detritus about the place, which is a credit to the Mods and their efforts. Thanks.

At one point, I seriously considered locking the site for the night, but after a lot of hunting around backstage, found a way of blocking registrations temporarily, which seems to have done the trick: turning them back on will probably start the spamming again, though....

Is there some way that registrations can be "moderated" before the person can begin to post?

As you can probably see, a notice has now been posted informing potential New Members that Registration has been temporarily suspended and giving the reason. We don't want to put off genuine newbies.

Any idea why this is happening now? (I haven't seen any of the offending posts.)

It'll be an automated thing in the same way that email spam is generated by botnets. Blogs suffer similarly.

I'm hoping that the new settings I've selected as an experiment will allow this to happen, r.

Someone happened on our site, and decided it would be a good place to spam - one of the early links actually included a variation of the forum name, so it was deliberate and targetted. No doubt some spammers work in loose alliances, and pass round links amongst themselves: two yesterday were both from the Caribbean, and we later had a whole spate from Russia.
