I remember him on Radio 1, although for the life of me cannot remember any of the artists he played. I do like that African music, though. I find it ever so merry!  Wink

I'll be sad to see it move to Monday nights. I'm invariably driving on Sundays after 10.15, and AK cheers me up. Otherwise I'd be gloomily contemplating the week ahead. I'm not sure the replacement will have the same effect, so I'll probably resort to my CD changer.

This was one of the problems when Andy Kershaw was on Radio 1 - they were continuously moving him all over the schedule. I best remember him on Sunday nights, 10pm to midnight (after John Peel). Sunday nights back then were grand: John Peel 8-10pm followed by Andy Kershaw. But eventually, Kershaw was axed in 2000 for the introduction of "another" dance music programme.

I have long thought Kershaw would be better off on Radio 2 but apparently, they don't do "foreign music" on there, so I guess Radio 3 will remain his home. But I am surprised he is being moved to Monday nights, as I thought the evenings were going to be predominately classical?

I rather liked the sunday night spot, far too much blah blah on radio 3 sundays, it needs to be a mix.

I think Sunday night was traditionally Andy Kershaw night! I agree that he's better off there. Mind you, at least he's not on at midnight anymore! Wink

Totally sad that they hide these gems, one of the things that makes radio 3 so good is the diversity.

Methinks Andy Kershaw should be moved to Radio 2. In return, Radio 3 could become more "classical".I am somtimes impressed with RTE Lyric FM in Ireland - I think it knocks spots off Radio 3.

Scott
AK will broadcast 25 hours later than at present: i.e. 11.15pm to 1am on Monday/Tuesday. So I'm afraid that most of his programme will now be after midnight. Angry

It amazes me why they do this to presenters: Bob Harris on Radio 2 has recently been pushed back an hour (11pm - 2am Saturdays). Poor Andy Kershaw once again gets shoved onto a graveyard slot. This was how he was eventually booted out the door on Radio 1. Sad

On balance, AK belongs on Radio 3 (aka "the station for people who take their music just a little too seriously!"). On R2, I suspect there would be pressure on him to drop the Folk and Country (already covered) and I can't see him getting more than an hour at a time. But that assumes that R3 is going to keep its wider remit, rather than just concentrating on orchestral music. I have a gut instinct feeling, though, that the High Ups will pressurise R3 to focus more tightly, squeezing AK out. In that case, it would depend upon whether AK would be willing to make enough compromises to fit the R2 bill. Given his past track record, my money would be on him deciding to concentrate on his new life on the Isle of Man and just doing free-lance programme making on his own terms.

I hope that this doesn't happen. Bringing AK to R3 was a stroke of genius. But given the way that R2 have cocked things up big time recently (Chris Evans? Dear God!), I don't have a lot of confidence in the Beeb's ability to listen to their listeners' views, nor in their ability to make sensible decisions.

There is a lot of overlap on Radio 2 between certain programmes. For example, Michael Parkinson overlaps with Desmond Carrington, who with Russell Davies, who overlaps with David Jacobs, who overlaps with Elaine Paige. Bob Harris "Saturday also overlaps with Bob Harris "Country, who overlaps with Nick Barraclough. Therefore, I don't think it would pose too much of a problem if Andy Kershaw was introduced to Radio 2. Indeed, he would overlap with the country music shows and Mike Harding, but at least Kershaw plays a diverse mix of global music.

With the way things are heading on Radio 3, I reckon Kershaw could be axed (alongside Lucy Duran). If anything, Duran probably won't make it onto Radio 2 but Kershaw might (even if he is prouned back to a mere 60 minutes).

I wonder if Roger Wright will start culling the jazz programmes next?
